Philadelphia Eagles Critical Loss To Falcons In Week 2

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles had their home opener at Lincoln Financial Field for the NFL Monday Night Game against the Atlanta Falcons. The Eagles won their first game 34-29 against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. In the game against the Packers, running back for the Eagles, Saquon Barkley ran the ball for 109 yards with two touchdowns on 24 carries. Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown caught five passes for 119 yards with one touchdown. Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the Eagles, threw for 278 yards with two touchdowns but threw two picks.

The Atlanta Falcons have a challenging couple of games after losing week 1 to the Pittsburgh Steelers 18-10. After Monday night’s game against the Eagles, they will play the two-time Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. Then, after that game, they will play the high-scoring New Orleans Saints. Both games will be in Atlanta. Before the Falcons could get to those games, they had to face the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles failed to stop the Atlanta Falcons in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, resulting in a 21-22 loss. The Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts connected for 76% of his passes with 23/30 in completions with 183 yards with one touchdown but did throw one interception. Hurts did carry the ball for 85 yards for one touchdown on 13 carries, but it wasn’t enough to push past the Falcons. A.J. Brown wasn’t available for the Eagles because of a leg injury.

Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins displayed his talents after questions about his performance in the Steelers game. Cousins threw for 241 yards, 20/29 completions, two touchdowns, and a passing rating of 117. The ex-Vikings connected with wide receiver Drake London on a seven-yard pass for the score with 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney led in receiving yards with 88 on three catches and one touchdown. The game-scoring hero for the Falcons, Drake London, finished the game with six catches for 63 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles Defense

The Eagles’ defense spent less time on the field but allowed 385 offensive yards to the Falcons, with the lack of defensive pressure on the Falcons QB. The defense only sacked Kirk Cousins once and received only two quarterback hits on him. The Eagles only had four tackles for losses. Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship led in tackles with nine solos but ten in total. The Eagles’ defense allowed 152 yards in rushing, with Falcons running back Bijan Robinson rushing for 97 yards with no touchdowns.

With the Philadelphia Eagles at 1-1, in the past two weeks, the defense has allowed 485 yards in passing and 315 yards in rushing, placing them near last in the league at 30 in total yards allowed. The defense has allowed 51 points in the first two games of the season putting them at sixth in the most points scored. Head Coach Nick Sirianni of the Eagles had this to say after the game, according to the teams’ website,

They made a couple more plays than we did down the stretch. We made some plays, they made more. That’s on all of us, it starts with coaching and goes to the players, we’re all responsible for the loss.

Final Thought

The Philadelphia Eagles don’t have any easy games in the near future next week, but they play a very productive offense in the New Orleans Saints. Eagles must also deal with the confidence-rising Tampa Bay Buccaneers to follow. The Philadelphia Eagles offense will need proper adjustments to surpass both teams with a victory. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley did what he could in the loss but the Eagles will need a better performance like the one he did against the Packers.
