The Michigan Wolverines had a chance to silence some doubters on Saturday. They didn’t take advantage of the opportunity. Texas came to Ann Arbor in a huge early season matchup and gave Sherrone Moore’s team an opportunity to show they are still one of the best teams in the nation. They were completely dominated all day. The Longhorns were able to score at will, but the Michigan offense couldn’t get anything going. College football analyst Paul Finebaum said after the game that the team now has an “impossible path” to the College Football Playoff.
Paul Finebaum On The Michigan Wolverines
The ESPN analyst didn’t hold back on the defending champs. Part of building a case to make the playoff is showing you can hang with elite programs. The Michigan Wolverines did not do that, and according to Finebaum, that is what will prevent them from making it.
“This is where I think the season really goes haywire for them, because they had to beat somebody. They had to make enough, they had to pull an upset, I think, to get to the playoffs. Texas was one of those schools and now, there’s an impossible path, quite frankly. I don’t want to write this entire season off because they were playing one of the three or four best teams in the country yesterday, but they were at home, and they were so ineffectual.
“So this program has virtually no shot, I think, in making the playoff. They can have a decent season under Sherrone Moore, his first year as the head coach but I think any hopes of repeating, any hopes of getting back, I think they’re done.”
The Michigan Wolverines still have elite programs on its schedule. Games against Ohio State and Oregon would go a long way in helping their case. However, drastic improvements have to happen. The Buckeyes have looked sharp through their first two games, albeit against inferior opponents. The Ducks have had their struggles but still have one of the most talented rosters in the nation. If the Wolverines are going to make it back to the postseason, things have to change quickly.
Roster Turnover
The Michigan Wolverines lost a lot of talent in the offseason, and it showed. While JJ McCarthy was criticized often for his play, he was clearly better than the roster’s options. Donovan Edwards has been disappointing so far and might be a player who is better than a complementary role. On defense, the Wolverines still have talent but are dealing with many new pieces as well. This is on top of coaching changes after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL.
Ultimately, Michigan is playing with house money this year. They won the national championship and had a great two-year run. However, at some point, Moore and his staff will have to show that they can play with the elite programs. It doesn’t look like this year will be that year.
