The Olympic women’s soccer finals will be held this upcoming weekend after the two dramatic semifinal games concluded yesterday. The USWNT faced off against Germany and scored a thrilling goal in the 95th minute to send them through to the finals, a huge sigh of relief after a disappointing few years for the USA team.
On the other hand, Brazil faced off against Spain and won a fantastic 4-2 game that had fans on the edge of their seats. This action-packed game gave us six goals, which showed just how attacking-minded both teams are as they go forward into the other team’s half.
Let’s see what we can expect from this historic Olympic women’s soccer final game this weekend.
Brazil Looking Forward
Brazil entered the knockout stage of the Olympics as the lowest-ranked team. Now, they are going to be playing in the Olympics women’s soccer final against the all-time number one USWNT. Even though Marta received a straight red card for a high challenge the other week, which saw the player left in agony and bawling at the fact it could be her last game, Brazil still managed to rally and make it to the semifinals.
In the group stages, Brazil also faced off against the Spanish side, which was filled with some of the best players in the world, like Bonmati and Putellas, and lost 2-0. They didn’t take the loss lightly, as they scored four past the Spanish keeper and won when it really counted. And they started on the front foot right from the get-go. Paredes’ own goal set a bad tone for Spain in just the sixth minute of play, followed by a powerful strike from Portilho, the Brazilian midfielder, to make it 2-0 going into the locker rooms at halftime.
Finally, Spain came back and scored a goal in the 85th minute, but it was just too little, too late for the European side. Brazil scored once more in extra time, followed by Spain, but the two-goal deficit was too much to make up in just a couple of minutes.
USWNT in the Olympics Women’s Soccer World
The U.S. team is looking to win another Olympic women’s soccer finals for their country. They bounced back from a terrible year in 2023 and have made it a goal to show the world that they are back with a new and exciting energy that they didn’t have in the last major tournament. The new manager, Emma Hayes, has been able to unlock the key attributes of players by changing tactics and switching the lineup. The front three attackers, Rodman, Swanson, and Smith, have combined for ten of the eleven goals in the tournament so far, showing just how lethal their teamwork can be when they combine.
Smith was the savior in the last game, finishing the goal in the 95th minute against Germany to see them through to the Olympics women’s soccer final match. In the previous game, it was Rodman who scored in an extra time period to see the USWNT beat Japan 1-0. Looking at the final game, it seems as though both teams will be very evenly matched. The USWNT hasn’t scored very much in the last two games, but they scored plenty in the group stages. Plus, they have let in very few goals against them, which is a credit to their back line consisting of huge players like Girma and Fox.
Brazil will have to use its creativity and technical ability to get past the USWNT. To win the Olympic women’s soccer finals, both teams will have to be on their A-game. Tune in on August 10th to watch the gold medal match in Paris, France.
