In a game that has been around for nearly 200 years, Shohei Ohtani accomplished a feat that has never before been done. A man who continues to astound the world with his abilities has created another spectacle for all of baseball to marvel at.
On Thursday night, Ohtani did the impossible as he became the first player in Major League history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. In typical Ohtani fashion, he did this in a game that will go down in history as one of the single best performances of any MLB player.
Ohtani’s Race To 50/50
Thursday, Sept. 19, became a night that will live in infamy. Heading into the game against the Miami Marlins, Ohtani had 48 home runs and 49 stolen bases. As soon as the game began, that number quickly became 48/50. While on second base with one out in the top of the first, he took a chance and stole third. For Ohtani, 50 was not enough as he stole yet another base in the next inning.
Now exceeding the 50 stolen base mark, everyone awaited the next bomb off the bat of Ohtani. That bomb came in the sixth inning. Ohtani blasted his 49th homer of the season to deep right field. The no-doubt shot accounted for two more runs on the board as the Dodgers were already annihilating the Marlins in the scorebook. His 49th homer was enough to tie the all-time Dodger record of single-season home runs. This record was originally held by Dodger legend Shawn Green in 2001.
The Historic Moment
The stage was set. Top of the seventh, two outs, a runner on third, and a 1-2 count as the Dodgers led the Marlins 12-3. The pitch was delivered and at the crack of the bat, not a single fan was sitting. As the ball traveled to deep left field, history was made. The energy was palpable as the roar from the stadium rumbled through Miami. A no-doubter, Ohtani was all smiles as he rounded the bases.
The insanity of the game continued to grow as Ohtani went yard for the third time in his final at-bat of the game. In the ninth inning, he launched a moon shot to the top right field deck. The world watched in disbelief as Ohtani had completed one of the best performances in baseball.
The Los Angeles Dodgers went on to win the game 20-4. Ohtani went 6-of-6 at the plate. He garnered three home runs, two doubles, two stolen bases, and 10 RBI. This is the first game in MLB history with three home runs and 2 stolen bases. Additionally, he is the first player since 1901 to have five or more hits and multiple stolen bases in a game, according to Sarah Langs.
Ohtani Leads Dodgers To Postseason Berth
With Ohtani’s performance on Thursday, the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a spot in the postseason. This is the Dodgers’ 12th straight postseason appearance. For Ohtani, this is the first time he will play in October.
Though the historic night holds substantial significance to Ohtani, playing in the Postseason has been both his and the Dodgers’ goal all season. Ohtani has played in 866 MLB games throughout his career. In those, he has never once been to the playoffs. This is the most among all active players until last night.
After taking the series from the Miami Marlins, the Los Angeles Dodgers are moving their focus to the Colorado Rockies as they begin a three-game set. They look to gain more ground in the NL West. Ohtani, now sitting at 51/51, looks to continue to make his impact on the Dodgers as the regular season is coming to a close.
