Vancouver Canucks Goaltender Thatcher Demko Out For Remainder Of Season
The Vancouver Canucks have officially shut down starting Goaltender Thatcher Demko for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign. General Manager Patrik Allvin announced Tuesday that the 29-year-old netminder requires hip surgery, ending his season immediately.
Demko has not suited up for the club since the team’s Jan. 10 matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs. While the team initially hoped for a return, medical consultations determined that surgery was the necessary route to ensure his long-term availability.
Demko Scheduled For Hip Surgery Next Week
According to the team statement, Demko will undergo the procedure next week. Allvin clarified that this hip issue is unrelated to the injury that sidelined the goalie during the previous season’s playoffs.
The timeline provided by the front office points toward a full recovery before the 2026-27 season begins. “Following his rehab, he will be ready for the start of training camp in September,” Allvin said. This ends a truncated and difficult year for the goaltender. Demko appeared in just 20 games for the Vancouver Canucks this season, posting an 8-10-1 record.
Future Implications For the Vancouver Canucks
That stretch of the season made the choice feel almost inevitable. With the team buried near the bottom of the standings, there wasnโt much sense in asking Demko to push through an injury just to chase wins that wouldnโt change the bigger picture. Giving him the rest of the year to heal takes the weight off his shoulders and lets the organization shift its focus toward the future instead of clinging to a playoff hope that was already out of reach.
Ensuring Demko returns healthy is a massive priority for the front office. The goaltender signed a three-year extension worth $25.5 million ($8.5 million AAV) that kicks in at the start of next season. With Demko out, the team will continue to lean on its depth goaltending to play out the final stretch of the schedule.
Given where the Canucks sit in the standings, this decision wasnโt just medically sound โ it was practical. The team has spent most of the season fighting uphill, and the playoff picture has been out of reach for weeks.
