Montreal Canadians head coach Martin St. Louis has left the team indefinitely. The Canadiens say he needs the time to be with his family. Neither the team nor the league provided any detail. The Habs are not having the best season, and this won’t help. “It was different with Marty not being here,” Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki said following a 5-2 loss to the Flames. “We have a really good group in here, a lot of good coaches and business as usual. Missing him and hoping and wishing for the best for him.” Assistant Trevor Letowski will lead the team in St. Louis’s absence. Montreal has just 25 wins and is 15 points out of the wild card race. The Canadiens made the announcement a little more than an hour before the game in Calgary last night.
Atlanta, Again, Really?
Two groups are trying to bring an NHL team to Atlanta for a third time. The city has already lost the Flames and the Thrashers. One of the groups led by former player Anson Carter made a formal request to the league to begin the process of bringing an expansion team to the city. The Flames and the Thrashers both left Atlanta because of poor attendance and ownership problems. “The league appreciates Anson’s passion for bringing NHL hockey back to the Atlanta area, and he has certainly kept the subject on our radar screen for several years running,” Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. Another group has said it wants to bring a team to Salt Lake City, Utah. The NHL has said it is not interested in expansion right now. It will not be easy to bring a new team into the league; the expansion fee could be up to $1 billion.
Women’s Pro Hockey Boasts Big Start
After just 24 games, the new Professional Women’s Hockey League is showing huge signs of success. The Toronto franchise sold out season tickets before the first game was played, and a game there last month had more than 19,000 fans in the Scotiabank arena. The PWHL has just six teams, but CTV in Toronto reports it has funding for the next ten years. All six teams are owned by the Mark Walter Group. Walter is the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, a global financial services company. Guggenheim also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers. At the inaugural game, a young fan held a sign saying, “Thanks for giving us girls a dream.”
