The New England Patriots have officially named Zak Kuhr as their full-time defensive coordinator, solidifying a role he held on an interim basis during the team’s run to Super Bowl LX.

Sources told NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo on Tuesday that the promotion was finalized following a successful stint calling plays in the 2025 season. The move comes as former defensive coordinator Terrell Williams transitions to a high-ranking staff role after battling prostate cancer.

A Seamless Transition

Kuhr, 37, took over play-calling duties after Week 1 of the 2025 season while Williams stepped away to focus on his health. Under Kuhr’s direction, the Patriots’ defense became a formidable unit, finishing the regular season ranked fourth in points allowed and eighth in total yards.

The defensive performance peaked during the postseason, where New England allowed an average of just 8.6 points per game across three AFC playoff victories. Despite a 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, the unit held firm, surrendering only 335 total yards and a single offensive touchdown in the championship game.

With Williams now healthy and moving into a new advisory position within the organization, the promotion of Kuhr was widely expected. Rapoport said that Kuhr was considered a “very, very, very” strong candidate to retain the job permanently given the continuity and success established over the past season.

Rapid Rise Through the Ranks

Kuhr’s ascent to one of the premier defensive coaching jobs in the NFL has been swift. He broke into the league in 2020 as a quality control assistant for the Tennessee Titans under Mike Vrabel. He spent the next three seasons as an inside linebackers assistant in Tennessee before spending the 2024 season as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants.

He rejoined Vrabel in New England for the 2025 season as the inside linebackers coach before being thrust into the interim coordinator role.

His ability to step in under difficult circumstances—filling the shoes of a colleague battling a serious illness—and lead a defense to a conference championship speaks to his command of the locker room and tactical acumen.

Continuity for 2026

The promotion signals a desire for stability in New England. With Kuhr returning, the defensive scheme is expected to remain largely consistent with the system that produced an AFC Championship.

The Patriots will now look to maintain that momentum as they approach free agency. Key contributors from Kuhr’s unit, including starting safety Jaylinn Hawkins and linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson, are notable pending free agents.

For Kuhr, the official title represents a significant career milestone. From a quality control assistant to a Super Bowl play-caller in just five years, he has quickly established himself as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Now, with the interim tag removed, the defense is officially his to lead.
