Former Minnesota Vikings Coach Mike Pettine Calls Out Current Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores
Mike Pettine, the former assistant head coach who recently hung up his headset, decided to spill the tea on his way out the door. In a recent interview on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show, Pettine was asked a seemingly innocent question about his thoughts on Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores as a head coaching candidate.
Now, usually, this is the part where a coach gives the standard, robotic “coach-speak” answer. You know the drill: “Heโs a great leader of men,” or “Any team would be lucky to have him.” Pettine did not do that. Not even close.
When “Not Seeing Eye-to-Eye” Means “Get Me Out of Here”
Instead of the usual platitudes, Pettine gave us a masterclass in Minnesota passive-aggressiveness. “Probably not many [thoughts] that I would prefer to share,” Pettine said. He didn’t stop there. He elaborated that the friction was so bad it literally forced him to change jobs within the same building.
“We didnโt see eye to eye on a lot of things,” Pettine said. “Thatโs why I spent this past year on offense. I was there in โ23 and โ24 on defense.”
Letโs pause and appreciate the absurdity of that. Imagine hating your boss’s style so much that you, a lifelong defensive guy, walk into the head coach’s office and say, “Put me with the quarterbacks.”
The Power Struggle Behind the Purple Curtain
This isn’t just about two guys bickering over coverage schemes. This hints at a genuine power struggle behind the scenes in Eagan. Pettine was brought in by Kevin O’Connell in 2022. Flores arrived a year later. Fast forward a bit, and the guy with the fancy “Assistant Head Coach” title is fleeing to the offensive meeting room just to find some peace.
It raises a fascinating question: Was Pettine actually pushed out with the Vikings? Heโs only 59, young in coaching years, yet he “retired” abruptly. Floresโ unit was a wrecking ball last season, finishing No. 3 in total defense and dragging the team to a 9-8 record. Winning cures everything, right? Well, almost everything. It apparently doesn’t cure the headache of working with someone you fundamentally disagree with.
Flores: The Genius With a Side Of Friction?
This isn’t the first time Flores has been accused of being difficult. His tenure in Miami ended with fireworks, lawsuits, and a very public beef with Tua Tagovailoa. Pettineโs comments just add another log to the fire of the “Flores is brilliant but prickly” narrative.
But here is the kicker: The players on the Vikings love him. The results are undeniable. And just this week, the Vikings handed Flores a contract extension to keep him from bolting for a head coaching gig in Pittsburgh or Baltimore.
So, where does that leave us? Pettine is out, enjoying retirement and presumably not sending Flores a Christmas card. Flores is staying put, armed with a new contract and total control of the defense. And the Vikings are moving forward, hoping the drama walked out the door with Pettine.
