Shedeur Sanders Could Slide to Day 2 of 2025 NFL Draft
Shedeur Sanders is one of if not the biggest and most well-known names in this year’s NFL Draft. However, there is a growing thought that you will hear here first, and that is Shedeur Sanders will fall in the draft. Not just a little, but all the way to day two. We will uncover exactly why that will happen, let’s dig into it!
Who is Shedeur Sanders?
Shedeur Sanders is the son of Deion Sanders, the former NFL cornerback and current head coach at the University of Colorado. The starting quarterback for Colorado, Shedeur Sanders had a mixed bag of results for his last year on the team heading into the NFL draft. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Texan native is looking to step out of his dad’s shadow and make a name for himself as he looks to be the bright shining star and face of an NFL franchise come draft time.
Yet as of late the hot name of Sanders seems to be falling further and further down the big board as teams are looking past just a name and really diving into the player Sanders is. What they are finding is showing a telling sign of teams backing away and looking to better players on a better team in a better conference.
Skills of Shedeur Sanders
Sanders had a fairly decent year at first glance of his stats. According to ESPN Sanders had over 4,000+ yards, 37 TDs and 10 interceptions. Nothing to shake your head at until you realize that Sanders was in the Big 12 Conference and didn’t exactly face the stiffest of competition week in and week out. Considering fellow quarterback draft classmate Jaxson Dart threw for similar yards, slightly fewer TDs but far fewer interceptions, but had to face top SEC teams every week, it makes one wonder why Sanders is even in talks of top five QBs.
Here is the controversial take, so get the popcorn out. Sanders wouldn’t be in the conversation if it wasn’t for his dad. If Sanders wanted to truly make a name for himself, he woudn’t be playing under his father. Without the last name Sanders then Shedur would easily be a day three or day four pick.
Throwing far too many interceptions against subpar teams will only show even worse at the highest level of football. The inability to control the football is a huge red flag for NFL teams, and draft day will show. This is no longer dad football, the best players need to play and there are many better quarterbacks in the draft class than Sandeers.
Why Teams Will Pass on Shedeur Sanders
According to NFL.com, there are five teams with QB as their biggest need for the 2025 season Titans, Browns, Giants, Saints and Steelers. However, the Browns made trades to get Kenny Pickett, the Giants made moves for Russell Wilson and the Saints used a draft pick for Spencer Rattler last year.
So there may be some pickiness when it comes down to who exactly these teams want leading the helm for the next 5-7 years. Sanders does not have the ability to lead a decimated Titans team, and there are more holes on that roster than the Titanic, so it would behoove the Titans to make some moves and get more picks to fill more needs, not waste them on a player with the last name Sanders. We already touched on Browns, Giants and Saints having stop gaps at the quarterback position, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go after better players like Quinn Ewers, Jalen Milroe or even Will Howard.
When the first three teams all pass off Sanders, it will all but cement the presumptive thought that he will fall to day two of the draft. There is no doubt a team will take a chance on the Colorado quarterback, but these NFL teams have seen the decimation effect of poor quarterbacks and how far it sets teams back for Super Bowl windows. There is a ton riding on these drafts and there are far more promising talent at other positions, like Ashton Jeanty, or a plethora of defensive standouts that will be solid secure picks to build on.
Final Thoughts
Sanders should have gone to a different school to truly show if he had true talent. for what it looks like is he is riding on the hype of his father. There would be little to no coverage of a quarterback from Colorado if Deion Sanders wasn’t the coach there, and if Shedeur Sanders wasn’t his son. To show to the NFL he has real talent and skill he needed to prove that at a place that his dad did not affect on.
His dad can’t protect him forever, he will need to face the bitter reality of the world that he is not a day one draft talent. He may have the ability to become that, but for now, he is just riding a name that NFL teams are finally noticing isn’t a good thing. Look to see Sanders get selected but don’t bet on day one.
