Rams Bring in Britain Covey on 1-Year Deal to Boost Special Teams
The Los Angeles Rams have signed wide receiver and return specialist Britain Covey to a one-year contract as they prepare for the 2025 season. Covey spent the last three years with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he built a solid reputation as one of the league’s most reliable punt returners. Though his last season was cut short due to injury, the Rams are betting on his ability to bounce back. They are looking for help in the return game, and Covey brings experience and upside without a big price tag.
A Standout in Philadelphia, Until Injury Struck
Covey made his mark with the Eagles on special teams. In 2023, he led the entire NFL in punt return yards with 417, averaging 14.4 yards per return. That average was the second-best in Eagles history, right behind DeSean Jackson’s 15.2 yards per return in 2009. He became someone fans could count on to give the team good field position.
However, 2024 was a different story. He got hurt early in the year, dealing with shoulder and neck problems that forced him to the sideline. After just five games, he landed on injured reserve and never made it back onto the field. The Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl, but Covey did not play in the title game. He stayed with the team through the run, though, and was still part of the roster that lifted the trophy.
Why the Rams Made the Move
Los Angeles had problems returning punts last season. They finished near the bottom of the league in that category and needed someone dependable back there. Covey checks that box. He does not need to be a star wideout or fill up the stat sheet as a receiver. His job is simple: catch the punt, find the gap and give the offense a shorter field. If he does that, the Rams will be thrilled.
The team’s receiving group is already full of talent. Puka Nacua looks like a long-term piece. Tutu Atwell adds speed. Davante Adams was added this offseason to lead the unit. Covey does not need to take snaps away from any of them. He just needs to do what he does best: return punts and maybe kickoffs too. That makes his role clear and easy to focus on.
Looking Ahead to the 2025 Season
This is not a blockbuster signing, but it is a smart one. Special teams plays do not always grab attention, but they often decide games. If Covey can stay healthy, he could quietly make a big difference. The Rams are not asking for miracles, just steady, reliable work. If he gives them that, it will be a win for both sides.
He also reunites with Nacua, another Utah product, which could help him settle in. The Rams are building a team that is more than just stars. They are filling in the gaps with players who do their jobs well. Covey might not be the loudest voice in the room, but if he gives them solid returns, this deal will look better and better as the season goes on.
