Is Veteran Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Set To Reunite With a Former Team?
The prodigal son just might be coming home to East Rutherford. In a move that instantly sent New York sports radio into an absolute frenzy, free-agent Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. strolled into the New York Giants facility on Monday for a workout and a physical.
It feels like a lifetime ago when a young Beckham Jr. was tearing up the turf at MetLife Stadium, racking up over 5,400 yards and 44 touchdowns in his first five seasons. Now 33 years old, he isn’t quite the explosive kid who took the league by storm. But the emotional pull of a Big Apple reunion? That is completely undefeated.
A Blast From the Past With John Harbaugh
If you are wondering why this is happening now, look no further than the man currently wearing the headset. New Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh spent the 2023 season with Beckham Jr. down in Baltimore, and the two clearly hit it off.
During the league meetings in Phoenix last month, Harbaugh didn’t exactly hide his affection for the veteran pass-catcher. He called him one of his “favorite people in the world” and admitted the two still text regularly. When your head coach is publicly singing your praises, getting a foot in the door for a Monday morning workout is a whole lot easier.
Why Big Blue Needs Receiver Insurance
Let’s look at the reality of the Giants’ current roster. The wide receiver room has some major question marks hanging over it, mostly revolving around star wideout Malik Nabers. After suffering a brutal torn ACL last September, Nabers’ timeline to return to the gridiron is still a bit murky.
While the front office just dealt defensive anchor Dexter Lawrence to the Bengals for the No. 10 overall pick, sparking rumors they might draft a dynamic prospect like Jordyn Tyson, they still need a reliable safety net. Enter Beckham Jr.
Interestingly enough, the current locker room is already rolling out the red carpet. Quarterback Jaxson Dart and Nabers himself have reportedly voiced their support for the move to the front office. Nabers even took to Instagram recently, telling his fellow LSU football alum, “Let’s play together.”
What Does Beckham Jr. Actually Have Left?
This is the million-dollar question. Beckham Jr. sat out the entire last season after serving a six-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. In 2024, his stint with the Miami Dolphins yielded just nine catches for 55 yards.
However, he recently turned heads by flashing some of his vintage route-running magic at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic in Los Angeles. Sure, flag football in shorts isn’t exactly the NFC East, but it showed he still has the undeniable itch to compete.
Right now, General Manager Joe Schoen is likely playing the waiting game. With the NFL Draft looming in Pittsburgh, the Giants will probably see how the board shakes out before putting pen to paper. But if the stars align, Beckham Jr. could transition from the team’s most dramatic departure to their most highly anticipated veteran mentor.
