Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants Week 6 Preview
The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants are set for an NFC East battle on Thursday Night Football. The Eagles are coming off a devastating 21-17 loss against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, blowing a 17-3 lead. Bo Nix and the Denver offense fought back in the fourth quarter, handing Philadelphia its first loss of the season. The Giants also lost on Sunday to the New Orleans Saints, in what might’ve been the sloppiest football I’ve ever seen. Multiple fumbles led to the Saints winning by a final score of 26-14.
Eagles Offense Needs To Shine
The Eagles’ offense has been extremely inconsistent to start the season. Every week, it seems like the play calling is too conservative, and they can never play a complete game. Many players have taken issue with shares on offense, including AJ Brown. Brown expressed his frustration multiple times this season, but the biggest one was putting out yet another cryptic tweet on social media.
Brown’s usage this year has been extremely confusing, and he has a good reason to be upset. He only has one game this season with over 50 receiving yards, and that was in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams. Kevin Patullo’s play-calling has been atrocious and has failed to get his playmakers involved. The reason why this is happening is that the running game has been nonexistent. Saquon Barkley has struggled throughout the first five weeks, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry.
The reason why the running game, along with the passing game, is struggling is mainly dude to poor play from the offensive line. Lane Johnson has exited two games early on due to neck injuries, and Landon Dickerson hasn’t looked like himself after suffering a meniscus injury in training camp. On top of the meniscus injury, Dickerson also sustained an ankle injury last week against the Broncos, meaning he’ll miss tonight’s game.
What makes Philadelphia’s offense so good is the effectiveness of the passing and running game, which both run through the offensive line. If they’re not winning the battle in the trenches, the offense will continue to struggle.
Giants Need To Play Clean Football
The Giants played great against the Los Angeles Chargers two weeks ago, but completely fell off against the Saints on Sunday. Jaxson Dart threw two interceptions, and the team as a whole had three fumbles in New Orleans. There is no way they’re going to win games when you keep giving the opposing team life. While they played a rough game, the fact that they only lost by 12 is definitely a testament to how strong this defense is.
Going up against the Eagles’ struggling offensive line, it’ll be fun to see if Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence can continue to wreak havoc and get after Jalen Hurts. And although they haven’t been involved often, the secondary will have their work cut out for them tonight, going up against AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert.
Key Matchups:
Matchup #1: Jalen Carter vs. Giants Interior Offensive Line. Jalen Carter is one of the best defensive tackles in all of the NFL, and he will be a huge problem for the Giants’ offensive line in tonight’s game. The Eagles have struggled to put pressure on the quarterback, but Carter can be a one-man wrecking crew. He’ll need to dominate in the trenches tonight and put pressure on Jaxson Dart.
Matchup #2: Eagles O-Line vs. Giants D-Line. Missing Landon Dickerson is a huge blow for the Eagles, especially going up against the Giants’ talented group on defense. In a game where the Eagles are still trying to find their identity on offense, the offensive line needs to step up. I think this could be the game where Saquon Barkley gets going, which will only benefit the passing game.
