Eagles Land Markel Bell, Strengthen Roster with High-Upside Pick

Bell at the NFL scouting combine running the 40-yard dash

With their 3rd round selection, the Philadelphia Eagles select Miami Tackle Markel Bell as another option that could replace Lane Johnson in the future. The only problem is that he played all of his snaps on the left side of the line at Miami, but it’s not a totally bad realm of possibility that he’ll have positional flexibility with the potential to play guard as well as the other tackle spot; he could theoretically replace a FUTURE HALL of FAMER Lane Johnson.

Bell is going to be an interesting O-Line Prospect for New Philadelphia Offensive Line Coach Chris Kuper, at 6’9”, 346 pounds. The Miami Tackle ran a 5.36-second 40 time at the combine, and that frame is really an impressive athlete score. This pick is an interesting one to look at, so let’s look at it a bit.

Bell’s 2025 Season Was A Good Season

Bell didn’t allow a sack in the 2025 campaign and only allowed between nine and 15 pressures, depending on the source, in a total of 558 pass-blocking snaps. That’s outstanding numbers for this prospect from the Hurricanes that the Super Bowl Champs from a couple of years ago just nabbed on Friday night. I love looking at those numbers and raw prospect measurables, and I think this guy is going to work in the NFL, but the offensive line is one of those positions where coaching matters most.

So it will be a question if Kuper can be a great talent developer like the previous guy, Jeff Stoutland, was for years in Philly. I like the player now, it’s on this new staff led by Nick Sirianni, Sean Mannion, along with Kuper, to make him into a great tackle of the future. Is he going to replace Lane Johnson’s levels? That remains to be seen, but Bell has greats to learn from in Johnson and Jordan Maliata.
