Detroit Lions Bounce Back with 44-22 Win Over Washington Commanders
Just a week after the Lions had a poor outing in their loss against the Minnesota Vikings, the Lions bounced back in a big way by dominating an injury-plagued Washington Commanders squad 44-22 in Week 10.
Lions Offense Gets Its Mojo Back
It was a perfect day on the field for the Lions’ potent offense, as Detroit scored on every possession while not punting once throughout the game. Both Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs had a field day, with Goff slicing apart the Commanders’ secondary for 320 yards passing and 3 touchdowns.
Gibbs gashed Washington on the ground for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns. Lions Wide Receiver Jameson Williams led the way in the passing attack, as he finished with 119 yards and a touchdown score to boot.
Commanders’ Nightmare Season Continues
Coming into the season, the Commanders were expected to be a formidable team after reloading the roster in the offseason. However, after starting 3-2 on the season, the Commanders have now lost six straight games with injuries piling up seemingly every week.
While backup Quarterback Marcus Mariota had a productive day for Washington as he finished with 213 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, it wasn’t enough as the defense gave up 546 total yards to an explosive Detroit offense.
Lions Stay In NFC North Race
With a win today, the Lions stay just a game behind the Green Bay Packers for 1st place in a division that has quickly become competitive midway through the season. Detroit will have a couple more games before a rematch with the Packers on Thanksgiving. Their next two games are against the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. If Detroit can claim one or both of its next two games, that Thanksgiving matchup could determine who rules the NFC North this season.
Should the Commanders tank the rest of the season?
Since the Commanders’ season officially went down when star Quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a gruesome arm injury last week, the 2026 NFL Draft should be the team’s main focus the rest of the season.
As the mock draft currently stands, the Commanders sit ninth in the draft order with their 3-7 record. While their draft position could change depending on how the teams in front of the Commanders finish out the year, a top-10 draft position is not a bad consolation prize for this nightmare of a season for the franchise.
Final Thoughts
As the holiday season quickly approaches, the Lions look to be in a prime position to get back to the playoffs for the third straight year. After an offseason that saw the departures of both Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson, it seems the Lions have been able to shake off those big losses this season.
If the Lions can finish out the year strong as well as capture the NFC North crown for the third year in a row, expect to see some buzz surrounding possible Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell receiving Coach of the Year honors.
