Dallas Cowboys Hold Off Washington Commanders To Win 30-23 On Christmas Day
On a cool Christmas Day in the United States Capitol, the Dallas Cowboys gave their fans the best Christmas present they could’ve asked for by getting their seventh win of the season over the Washington Commanders.
Cowboys Ground Game Helps Dallas Dominate the Clock In Win
It was a balanced attack by the Cowboys as they were able to get whatever they wanted on offense, especially in the first half. The Cowboys jumped out to a commanding 21-3 lead in the second quarter behind a fantastic first-half from Running Back Javonte Williams.
The former Bronco rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown in the first half before exiting the game due to a shoulder injury in the second quarter. However, backup Running Back Malik Davis picked up where Williams left off, as he finished with 103 yards to help keep the Cowboys’ offense humming on the ground.
The Cowboys thoroughly dominated in the rushing department as they finished with 211 yards on the ground for the game. That impressive rushing attack deployed by Dallas helped the Cowboys possess the ball for over 38 minutes of game time.
Josh Johnson Impresses For Commanders Despite the Loss
While it is a lost season for the Commanders, the team, along with third-string QB Josh Johnson, put forth a valiant effort in the loss. The NFL journeyman finished with 198 yards passing to help the Commanders keep within striking distance late in the game.
The weapons on offense for Johnson also gave their Christmas best against the Cowboys. Star receivers Deebo Samuel Sr. and Terry McLaurin finished the day with 68 yards and 63 yards each in the loss.
Running Back Jacory Croskey-Merritt continued his late-season push for the Offensive Rookie of the Year with another great performance. The former Arizona Wildcat rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns, with one of those touchdowns coming on a 72-yard dash in the third quarter.
Final Thoughts
While this game had zero playoff implications, as both teams have been eliminated from the postseason this season, there was still a bit to play for in this one. The win for the Cowboys moves Dallas one step closer to finishing the season at a .500 record. Dallas was expected to finish under .500 before the season.
For the Commanders, this loss will improve their draft position for next year’s NFL draft. That, combined with the performances of rookies like Croskey-Merritt, at least gives Commanders fans a little bit of hope this holiday season.
