Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe said that Bruno Guimarães’s £100 million release option expires at the end of June. He thinks that this is a smart move to prevent a summer of speculation. Bruno Guimarães has been very important for Newcastle since he signed for the club, and Eddie Howe has said that he wants to build his team around the 26-year-old defender. It’s no secret that Manchester City, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Bruno Guimarães, and the club expects to get offers for him after the season is over.
Newcastle Boss Wants to Keep 26-year-old Brazilian Midfielder
Eddie Howe is determined to keep Bruno Guimarães at St James’ Park and believes that setting a high release clause is helpful.
‘Having that was well planned and structured by the club, in a sense that there is a finish point,’ he said. ‘We don’t want the constant speculation, I don’t think that’s healthy for the player or for us.’
The Brazilian midfielder, 26, joined Newcastle in a £40m deal from Lyon in January 2022. His worth has at least doubled in the period since, and Howe added:
‘It goes without saying that my thoughts are we want to keep Bruno and build our team around him. He is an integral part of what we’re doing. His form has been very good. He seems very happy and settled. He will be thinking about a busy summer ahead and, hopefully, where we can take the team with him a big part of that. But I’m not in control of that, so let’s see.’
Meanwhile, Howe has expressed that he has not been involved in the decision-making process regarding the next sporting director, as the recruitment process nears its conclusion. According to a report by Mail Sport on Thursday, Crystal Palace chief Dougie Freedman is among the contenders. Howe said:
‘If the club wanted to seek my opinion, I’d be more than happy to do that. That hasn’t happened to this point and I respect and understand that. But it’s a big appointment for us, we have to try and get it right. We have to work really closely with whoever it is to take the team forward and make good decisions for the future of the club. It’s an absolutely key appointment for us. It will be the best candidate, that is all I would want. I don’t have a preference over nationality, just the best person who can help take the club forward.’
Would Bruno Guimaraes Departure Affect Newcastle?
Newcastle United made the biggest signing of the Eddie Howe era, bringing in Bruno Guimarães from Lyon for £40 million. The Brazilian has since impressed and has been a dominant force in the midfield of the Magpies. The departure of Bruno Guimarães will weaken the morale of Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe will be hopeful that the Brazilian stays.
Guimarães is right-footed and often plays as a deep-lying playmaker or higher up in a central-midfield two or three. His forward passing, in particular, and passing range in general are his strongest skills. He breaks up lines by passing to players further ahead, and he moves the ball forward in a number of different ways. He has excellent distribution in the middle of the field and can adjust his passing style in response to the movements and actions of the players in front of him.
