The New York Yankees injury concerns are not off to a good start. There is something important to monitor and we haven’t even thrown the first pitch in baseball. The superstar pitcher has had a rough Spring Training. Gerrit Cole has been unable to perform within the last week due to a right elbow injury. Less than a week ago, Cole was complaining about soreness in his right elbow after a batting practice session. He has gone through many tests to determine the results sustained from the injury.
On Saturday, more news was released about New York Yankees superstar pitcher Gerrit Cole, who has inflammation and edema in his right elbow. Cole will not be allowed to throw for 3-4 weeks.

Last Monday the New York Yankees pitcher had an MRI done to see what had happened to his right elbow. Recently, it was stated that the superstar would be out for one to two months with the organization. He did not miss any games throughout the early portion of spring training, but he began to feel sore during and after those games. Sadly, it did not get better for the New York Yankees star pitcher as he dealt with fatigue as well.
Unfortunately, the amount of time may equal 10-12 weeks. Gerrit Cole will not be the starter for Opening Day in less than two weeks. Cole has been dominant for the New York Yankees in recent years. Last season, he was the best pitcher in all of the American League.
Gerrit Cole Stats With The New York Yankees
Gerrit Cole won the Cy Young Award in 2023. He played in 33 games with a record of 15-4 as a starting pitcher for the Yankees. Cole held an ERA of 2.63 and had 222 strikeouts on the mound. The New York Yankees ace was the best pitcher on the roster by far, despite a down year for the baseball team (82-80).
Gerrit Cole will be entering his fifth season with the New York Yankees in 2023. His timeline could be set for a return in May. The good news is that Gerrit Cole will not have to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The doctor on the Los Angeles Dodgers staff stated that rest would be the best medicine for treatment purposes.
New York Yankees Replacement Pitcher
With the New York Yankees ace pitcher not being available. They have named a new starter for Opening Day in Nestor Cortes. He held an ERA of 4.97 with 67 strikeouts in 12 games last season. Their first game of the 2024 season will be against the Houston Astros. Gerrit Cole has a contract worth 144 million dollars for four years. New York Yankees fans are hoping that Cole can return to the lineup in the next two months.
Since the New York Yankees named Cortes the starter, he feels confident that he is ready to step up. On Friday he stated, according to a Yahoo Sports article from Jack Baer,
I told [Boone] that I’m prepared for it,” Cortes said. “He affirmed that he knew I could take up that task. I’ve been up and down, I’ve been back and forth between starting and bullpen in ’21. I’ve got put into many different roles throughout my whole career, so I feel like I can go out there and show I can be the guy.
It will be different with Cortes on the mound to start the new season. But, if Gerrit Cole does what the doctor orders, fans will see him back in the New York Yankees uniform in no time!
