The New York Yankee Superstar Gerrit Cole will unfortunately be out for longer than we originally hoped. Word was just given today that Cole will be out for a month or two from his recent elbow injury. The damage is not extensive, however, as reported by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.

New York Yankees Gerrit Cole had injured his elbow recently. As we covered originally, Cole underwent an MRI on Monday after complaining of a sore right elbow. Luckily, there doesn’t seem to be a tear in the infamous ulnar collateral ligament, as the report states. He will still have to miss some of the regular season—he’s expected to sit out one to two months of play to let that injury heal.
Gerrit Cole did visit with several Yankees doctors already, but he will be going outside the state to get treatment. According to the New York Post, Cole will be making his way to Los Angeles to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache, a noteworthy sports surgeon and orthopedist. The damage is not so severe that he will miss a ton of the regular season, but the ligament has proven concerning enough to call for an in-person visit.
Cole’s Initial Assessment Of The Injury
The unanimous winner of last year’s AL Cy Young Award, Cole will sadly sit out the game for an “extended period”, says Heyman. He had said that his fatigue was similar to what it felt like throwing 100 pitches during the regular season. However, Yankees Manager Aaron Boone stated that he will no longer be playing for Opening Day.
“He’s handling it,” Boone said when asked about Cole’s attitude toward the injury. “Right now, it’s … that uncertainty. You try to get your arms around what exactly’s going on in there.”
Is There Hope For His Spring Appearance?
“Right now, there’s uncertainty about what’s going on in there. We’re waiting on everyone to weigh in,” Said Boone Tuesday. “Sometimes the first look isn’t [conclusive]. You want to make sure when you’re talking about the elbow. You want to make sure you get it right and make the best decision. We’ve just got to be patient.”
Clearly, the team is very optimistic about the Yankees ace Gerrit Cole coming back strong and ready in no time. That being said, they want to wait and stay on the safe side of things to make sure Cole is ready to come back to action when he can. All the Yankees can do for now is hope that his trip to L.A. brings him back to the sport with good news.
The 33-year-old signed for a nine-year contract before the 2020 season for $324 million.
