With the World Series recently over, the New York Yankees’ 2024 season was a failure for fans and experts. The Yankees’ season was undermined by two crucial factors. Weak starting pitching depth and a lack of hitting depth. There was also a lack of fundamentals during this season with horrible fielding and baserunning. New York’s baserunning and poor fielding was exposed in the World Series. Even with top-tier talent, the lack of fundamentals cost them a championship.
This season had the potential to win it all but became a complete failure of the organization. With the impending free agency of one of their star players, this season could lead to more apathetic ownership. While they have the payroll, the owner will probably not spend much due to their past mistakes. This New York Yankees season was a disaster due to the anticipation of a championship, but it ended with failure.
The New York Yankees Lack Of Depth Hitting and Pitching
The New York Yankees season started with much hype with the key acquisition Juan Soto leading the charge. Soto was a star with the Yankees during the season and had a solid 2024 campaign. Along with Soto, Aaron Judge had another historic season for the Yankees with another 50+ home run season.
The Yankees during the first three months were on pace for an historic win record but a poor June ended those chances. New York ended the first half with a solid 54-33 record but had flaws entering the All-Star break. The Yankees pitching with Gerrit Cole had flaws, giving up four home runs against the Mets. The New York Yankees during the regular season while Cole became solid, had starting rotation issues. Carlos Rodon was struggling during the season along with Luis Gil having cold stretches after an 8-0 start. The Yankees also spent money on Marcus Stroman and he ended the season with a 4.31 ERA.
There was also a lack of quality hitting besides Judge and Soto this season. Due to the injuries of Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo, the lineup struggled. These issues caused them to struggle in June and July and during the home stretch of the season. Depending on the inconsistent Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wells did not pan out well during the season. Volpe had a solid start but fell off a cliff in the second half, which was troubling to see. There was also Wells who did well during the season but striking out consistently happened at the worst time.
New York’s Lack Of Fundamentals
Another troubling problem in the New York Yankees season is baseball fundamentals falling apart. During the season, the Yankees have struggled with fielding being last in defensive metrics. Those metrics cost the Yankees crucial games including losses in the World Series.
New York also lacked quality base running with Volpe struggling during the Game 3 loss. During the regular season, the Yankees were ranked low in stealing bases. Even with the strong hitting, the base running was awful for “The Bronx Bombers” and cost them this season.
A Lost Opportunity And The Juan Soto Question
All these issues culminated in a failed World Series run against the Los Angeles Dodgers. During game one, the Yankees held a strong lead but non-clutch hitting and managerial mistakes cost them. Boone had Nestor Cortes pitched and it became a disaster against the Dodgers.
The entire series became a nightmare for the Yankees, including nearly getting shut out in Game 3. With the talk of past success, the Yankees in this World Series represented failure again. The New York Yankees’ Game 5 performance was a nightmare, that had all their fundamentals exposed as a sham.
Even with many of the same players coming back, the New York Yankees have many questions about sustainability. During this offseason, Soto will be a free agent and could leave the organization. The Yankees with Hal Steinbrenner have also been cheap with the Yankees payroll except with certain players. This could cost the Yankees Juan Soto and another lost season due to cheapness with the Yankees.
Final Words
Even with a successful postseason run the New York Yankees season was a disaster due to not winning it all. Before the season, the New York Yankees’ expectations were always winning champions but that World Series was far from it. This embarrassment of a series shows the failure of the organization.
The lack of starting pitching and hitting depth cost the Yankees many games and even the World Series. Pitching was flawed with the Yankees, with Rodon and Gil underachieving and Stronman not on the playoff roster. These factors for the Yankees are unsustainable and cost them a World Series championship.
Along with the failure of their hitting, the Yankees were also poor in fielding with three errors in Game 5. New York’s poor fundamentals during the season have been costly and have cost them a championship. The New York Yankees, also have issues with payroll with Steinbrenner being cheap and it may cost them Soto. With ownership being apathetic, it causes apathy in the front office to the coaches and the team culture.
New York season was a failure because they believed to be champions after a cakewalk World Series path. The Yankees damaged fundamentals, poor management and lack of accountability are costing the team championships and could cost them again. With the apathy of Hal not changing the front office, the New York Yankees could be in a position of purgatory for another 15 years.
