The New York Mets got into an early hole this evening on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers. Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning and Brewers First Baseman Rhys Hoskins hit a grand slam to give Milwaukee an early 4-0 lead. The offensive onslaught would not stop there as Milwaukee tacked on a run to make it 5-o after two innings of play. New York Mets Third Baseman Mark Vientos got the Mets team on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the third.
Milwaukee responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to chase Manaea from the game. He surrendered five earned runs over 3.2 innings. The night got worse for the New York Mets as they surrendered another run in the sixth to fall behind 7-2. New York made a late push but it was too little too late as they lost the first game of this series 8-4. Will New York be able to rebound on Saturday?
New York Mets Offense Comes Alive Too Late
The bats of the New York Mets struggled at the most inopportune of times. New York got their chance as they had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth. A tremendous catch by Left Fielder Jackson Chourio limited New York to only a Sac Fly for the second out of the inning. New York scored again the following batter on an error by Second Baseman Brice Turang. New York now trailed 7-4.
Milwaukee made sure New York would not start more of a comeback tonight as Designated Hitter Gary Sanchez added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for the final run of the evening. New York finished the game 0-of-5 with RISP and only mustered seven hits.
New York’s Loss Proves Costly
With their loss this evening, the New York Mets(87-71) are now tied with the Atlanta Braves for the third National League Wild Card spot. The Arizona Diamondbacks(88-71) now occupy the second spot as their game as their game with the San Diego Padres is still being played. There are three teams(Mets, Braves, and Diamondbacks) fighting for two remaining wild card spots. The 2024 MLB season may come down to the results of a doubleheader on Monday in Atlanta, Georgia between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets.
Looking Forward To Tomorrow’s Game
At the time of publication, the starting pitchers for the second game of this series have not been announced. Both managers will presumably take the evening to think over who they should send to the mound with the MLB Playoffs around the corner. These two ballclubs are at much different junctures in their season though.
The Milwaukee Brewers are locked into the No. 3 seed in the National League Playoffs while the New York Mets will be in high-leverage games for the remainder of the regular season. New York, on the other hand, will be fighting for their playoff lives over their final four games.
