New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza announced earlier today the team is shutting down Starting Pitcher Frankie Montas. He has not been throwing in Mets camp this year following a high-grade lat sprain. This injury is suspected to sideline Montas for 6-8 weeks.
Montas was one of New York’s marquee offseason moves signing a two-year $34 million contract with the New York Mets in December. With a lack of a ramp-up for Montas in Spring Training, Montas will require a few appearances in the Minor Leagues to become ready to pitch in the majors. How will he pitch for the New York Mets this season?

New York had one of the league’s best offseason following a shocking run to the NLCS. They would lose in six games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets landed the biggest fish of the offseason in Right Fielder Juan Soto. He signed the biggest contract in league history to make the move to Queens.
Montas was one of the major moves New York made this offseason to revamp their starting rotation. He was slated to join a pitching staff which includes free-agent signing Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, free-agent signing Clay Holmes, and David Peterson. The New York Mets had a strong rotation in 2024 and must rely on their depth to weather the Montas injury.
Final Thoughts
Unfortunately for the New York Mets and their fans, injuries to a starting pitcher are nothing new. Senga only made one regular season in 2024 with various shoulder injuries. He made three starts during the MLB Playoffs but fared miserably. He had a horrendous 12.60 ERA. New York’s starting rotation will look to stay afloat until Montas is healthy enough to make his team debut.
