The offense of the New York Mets propelled them to a 5-3 victory tonight on the road over the Chicago White Sox. Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the first inning. It was his 30th of the season and his third round-tripper in the last five games. New York Mets Left Fielder Jesse Winker picked up where he left off last night and went back-to-back with Alonso. He hit a solo home run in the top of the first and added an RBI single in the top of the third finishing the game 3-of-3. Winker had an RBI double in last night’s victory.
Right Fielder Starling Marte added an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning for the New York Mets’ final run of the game. Grounding into a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Designated Hitter Gavin Sheets in the bottom of the third inning were Chicago’s first two runs this evening. Right Fielder Corey Julks grounded into a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth inning for Chicago’s final run. Left Fielder Andrew Benintendi came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on first and second base, but he grounded out to Relief Pitcher Jose Butto to end the game and secure the victory for the New York Mets.
Both Starting Pitchers Performed Well
Both of the starting pitchers in tonight’s game fared well in 2024, and the same was true this evening in “The Windy City.” NY Starting Pitcher Jose Quintana pitched well against his former team. He surrendered two runs(one earned) over five innings of work while punching out six. White Sox Starting Pitcher Davis Martin also pitched well tonight but received little help from an awful Chicago offense. He surrendered four earned runs over five innings this evening.
Both bullpens also fared well with New York’s tossing four scoreless innings and Chicago’s surrendering one earned run over four innings. Neither ballclub fared well RISP tonight either as they both went 2-of-11 in the game.
New York Mets Go For Series Sweep On Sunday
The final game of this three-game set will take place tomorrow afternoon and pit New York Mets Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea (10-5, 3.51 ERA) against Garrett Crochet(6-9, 3.64 ERA). These two starting pitchers have been the aces of their respective staffs in 2024. Manaea is coming off a strong start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He surrendered three earned runs over 6.2 innings and matched his season high with 11 punchouts.
Crochet is fifth in the league in strikeouts. His last start against the Texas Rangers was suspended after a mere four pitches. The New York Mets will look to win tomorrow and complete the series sweep as they look to make up more ground in the National League Wild Card race. NY is now only two games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot after the Atlanta Braves lost earlier tonight.
