The New York Mets are in desperate need of starting pitching. With Tylor Megill and Kodai Senga still healing on the injured list, the team lists just four starters in the rotation. However, for as pitching-needy as the team is, they apparently weren’t needy enough to keep a two-time All-Star on the staff.
After just one start, the New York Mets designated veteran hurler Julio Teheran for assignment. Teheran was signed by the team after Megill went on the IL, and he made his first start for the ballclub on Monday night at the Atlanta Braves.
After ejecting Teheran, the team called up pitcher Dedniel Nunez from Triple-A Syracuse.
New York Mets Won in Teheran’s Debut
The New York Mets actually claimed the victory in Teheran’s debut, spoiling the Atlanta Braves’ 50th Anniversary celebration of Hank Aaron’s 715th home run.
However, Teheran had next to nothing to do with the win. The 13-year MLB veteran allowed the Braves four earned runs on six hits and two walks over just 2-2/3 innings. If not for Brandon Nimmo’s 4-for-4, two-homer, five-RBI night, the result would have turned out much differently.
New York Mets Were Teheran’s Fourth Team in Past Four Seasons
Teheran was once one of the forefront pitchers in the Braves rotation. In nine years with the Braves, he logged a 77-73 record with a 3.67 ERA and 1,184 strikeouts. He was named to the All-Star Game in both 2014 and 2016. He won a career-high 14 games in both 2013 and 2014.
However, the Colombian native became a free agent after the Braves did not pick up his contract option at the end of the 2019 season. He has become something of a nomad in recent seasons, pitching with the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Teheran did not pitch in MLB in 2022, but signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on May 23 of last year. He went 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA with Milwaukee. However, he was designated for assignment just before the end of the regular season.
The 33-year-old pitched in spring training with the Baltimore Orioles, but did not make the team and opted out of his minor-league contract.
