The New York Mets, still winless through four games this season, made a move Wednesday to bolster the team’s pitching staff with the addition of a two-time All-Star.
New York has largely eschewed big-name signings this season after their tumultuous 2023 campaign. However, the move was made necessary with two key members of the Mets’ starting rotation being out injured.
In an attempt to bolster a flagging starting staff, the Mets have brought aboard 12-year MLB veteran Julio Teheran. Teheran, most recently pitched with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 33-year-old pitched in spring training with the Baltimore Orioles, but did not make the team and opted out of his minor-league contract.
Mets down to four starting pitchers
New York went into crisis mode after the team was forced to place starter Tylor Megill on the injured list. Megill left Monday’s start against the Brewers with a sore right shoulder. He was quickly placed on the IL with what was termed a right shoulder strain.
Megill joins fellow Mets starter Kodai Senga on the IL. Senga has yet to pitch this season for New York as he continues to recover from his own shoulder injury.
With Senga and Megill out, the Mets were down to a starting quartet of Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Adrian Houser.

Mets taking a flier on Teheran
Teheran was once one of the forefront pitchers in the Atlanta Braves rotation. In nine years with the Braves, he logged a 77-73 record with a 3.67 ERA and 1,184 strikeouts. He was named to the All-Star Game in both 2014 and 2016. He won a career-high 14 games in both 2013 and 2014.
However, the Colombian native became a free agent after the Braves did not pick up his contract option at the end of the 2019 season. He has become something of a nomad in recent seasons, pitching with the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Teheran did not pitch in MLB in 2022, but signed a one-year contract with the Brewers on May 23 of last year. He went 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA with Milwaukee. However, he was designated for assignment just before the end of the regular season.
