3 New York Jets Takeaways After Sloppy 10-9 Loss to Denver Broncos

The New York Jets have fallen to 2-2 on the season after losing at home against the Denver Broncos 10-9. The Jets’ offense could not get much going from the jump as they had 16 total first downs and only mustered 248 total yards of offense. Let’s take a look at the biggest takeaways of this game and what this means for the team going forward.

New York Jets Takeaways in Week 5

Penalties are killers

The New York Jets played incredibly sloppy throughout the game as they were seeing yellow penalty flags thrown against the team on a consistent basis. The Jets were called for 13 penalties that cost the team 90 yards throughout the game. That is only the accepted penalties and that is not going to get things going as the team could not establish any momentum and killed drives. This has been something that has been a bit of a common occurrence for the Jets under coach Robert Saleh as they now have 31 penalties against them in four games.

Offense looked sloppy throughout the game

The New York Jets are expected to be a solid offensive team but they were unable to get much offense going throughout the game. The team was only able to secure one first down in the first quarter and did not score a touchdown against a good Denver Broncos defense. However, coming off 3+ offensive touchdowns in each of their first three games of the season, this is certainly a bit of a concern.

The team was only able to convert 4-of-17 on third down attempts and averaged 2.8 yards per carry on 23 rushing attempts. Running back Breece Hall was brutal with just 10 rushing attempts for four yards and the team cannot expect to do well with these numbers. Going up against Bo Nix, the defense played incredibly well but one drive was all it took and the Broncos found the end zone while the Jets could not.

Aaron Rodgers health

One thing that every New York Jets fan has been cautious about this year has been the health of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He is returning from a torn Achilles tendon and has looked pretty solid in the first three games. However, things did not seem as good this week as he finished 24-of-42 for 225 yards (5.4 yards per attempt) and was sacked five times. That is after being sacked five times throughout the first three games and he came up limping with his left leg being hurt during the fourth quarter.

Rodgers has been able to do well, but this is the worst that he looked in a game this season. With the injury to right tackle Morgan Moses and starting rookie Olu Fashanu at right tackle, things did not look as crisp. The health of Aaron Rodgers is critical for the New York Jets to have success this season but the good news is that he played through the pain. This looked more like the 2023 New York Jets than any other game this season. It will be interesting to see the health of Rodgers as they prepare for the London game next week against a surging Minnesota Vikings team.
