New York Jets Hire Aaron Glenn as Next Head Coach

The New York Jets have made it official as they have a new head coach in Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. This is after having Robert Saleh fired during the season and interim coach Jeff Ulbrich has left to become the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. After an extensive search, the New York Jets have landed their former player to be the next head coach and he has already began establishing his coaching staff. Let’s take a look at all the details that we know at this point.

It was announced on Wednesday afternoon that the New York Jets have agreed to terms with Aaron Glenn to become the team’s next coach. FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Shultz is reporting the following coaches are targets to join his coaching staff:

  • Steve Wilkes as defensive coordinator
  • Mark Brunell
  • Chris Banjo as Special Teams Coordinator
  • Thomas Brown
  • Todd Haley
  • Mike Westhoff

Aaron Glenn also becomes the fifth NFL coach currently employed by a team that he played for as he was a three-time Pro Bowl defensive back and spent his first eight seasons (1994-2001) with the New York Jets after being selected with the 12th pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. He has been in a leadership role before as he was the Houston Stallions general manager as well as a personnel scout for the New York Jets before transitioning to coaching, where he has been the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator since 2021.

This will be an interesting hire as ESPN New York radio host and New York Yankees play-by-play announcer reported that Glenn is in favor of keeping quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 NFL season. The Jets are looking for some stability as they currently hold the longest playoff drought in North America’s four major sports with 14 consecutive seasons out of the postseason. The team operates where the power dynamic does not go from coach to general manager to owner but instead both the coach and general manager answer to the owner, so landing the right general manager will also be significant.

The New York Jets are coming off a 5-12 season and have a lot of question marks before Glenn makes his head coaching debut. They have 23 unrestricted free agents as well as wide receiver Garrett Wilson being reportedly unhappy with his role while Davante Adams will need to renegotiate the remaining two years, $72.5 million remaining on his contract. With only $25 million currently in cap room, this team has to step up and having Aaron Glenn as the new face of the franchise should be a step in the right direction.
