  • In their last five games, they have shown elite offensive versatility and a dominant rebounding presence, however, they have struggled with defensive consistency and perimeter defense against high-volume 3-point shooting teams.

  • Injuries: Landry Shamet-Out (right knee tibial plateau contusion); Miles McBride-Questionable (pelvic core muscle injury)

Thunder Form (58-16)

Key Players to Watch

Knicks

As the Knicks leading scorer, Point Guard Jalen Brunson’s ability to navigate the Thunder’s perimeter defense will be critical, as he is coming off a 26-point, 13-assist performance in his last outing. Center Karl-Anthony Towns is currently averaging a double-double with 12.0 rebounds and over 20 points. Expect his size and outside shooting ability to draw Chet Holmgren away from the basket as a defender, allowing open lanes to the rim for Knicks’ guards.

Forward OG Anunoby is leading the team with 1.6 steals per game, and has been an offensive spark as of late, hitting five 3-pointers in back-to-back games. Forward Josh Hart is a rebounding force, averaging 7.6 RPG. In the Knicks first meeting against the Thunder, he recorded a double-double in just 25 minutes of play.

Listed as questionable, McBride is expected to potentially make his long-awaited return since being sidelined in late January. If he plays, his perimeter defense and secondary playmaking will provide a much needed boost to the Knicks’ depth.

Projected Starting Lineup:

  1. Jalen Brunson (PG)
  2. Josh Hart (SG)
  3. Mikal Bridges (SF)
  4. OG Anunoby (PF)
  5. Karl-Anthony Towns (C)

Thunder

Thunder Point Guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is ranked 2nd in the league in scoring with 31.4 PPG. He put up 26 points and dishes 8 assists in his last matchup against the Knicks on March 4. Also having a dominant showing in the last matchup against the Knicks was Center Holmgren, who finished with 28 points, 8 rebounds, including six made 3-pointers.

Forward Jalen Williams provides the Thunder with a critical second ball-handler who can break down the Knicks’ defensive wings. In his most recent performance against the Bulls he contributed 18 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds. A former Knick, Center Isaiah Hartenstein, is a rebounding and dime-dishing force, averaging 9.6 RPG and almost four assists.

Projected Starting Lineup:

  1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (PG)
  2. Isaiah Joe (SG)
  3. Jalen Williams (SF)
  4. Luguentz Dort (PF)
  5. Chet Holmgen (C)

How Will the Knicks’ Defense Hold Up on the Road?

The Knicks’ offense is considered to be an unstoppable force, while the Thunder’s defense is considered to be an immovable object. With that being said, how well will one of the top-three offenses in the league fare against the number one defense in the league? Furthermore, the Thunder’s offense is ranked number two in the NBA, and the Knicks’ defense as of late has struggled when on the road.

Knicks Offense vs Thunder Defense

Towns’ ability to make three point shots is the Knicks’best weapon against the Thunder. By pulling Holmgren away from the rim, they can neutralize the Thunder’s shot-blocking abilities and create driving lanes for the Knicks’ guards. The Knicks can be relentless on the offensive boards. If they can exploit the Thunder’s tendency to give up offensive rebounds, they can win the battle on the glass tonight.

Dort and Gilgeous-Alexander are amazing point-of-attack defenders. Head coach Mark Daigneault will likely alternate between the two of them against Brunson to wear him down physically, a strategy that helped his team get the victory and hold the Knicks to just 100 points in their previous meeting.

Thunder Offense vs Knicks Defense

Gilgeous-Alexander is the NBA’s most skilled athlete at getting to the basket whenever he wants. He thrives on creating contact and getting to the free throw line. If he can draw early fouls on Anunoby or Mikal Bridges, the Knicks’ defensive structure will collapse. The Thunder are top-5 in fast-break points, they will look to push the pace immediately after a miss or a turnover, aiming to score before the Knicks’ set their defense.

Knicks’ head coach Mike Brown will look to Towns and Mitchell Robinson to provide substantial rim protection and presence in the paint. The primary goal will be to wall off the paint and force the Thunder to settle for the three-point shot that they have struggled with recently.

What to Expect in Tonight’s Matchup?

Tonight’s matchup shouldn’t be one with an extremely high pace. Both teams like to slow the ball down and play a half-court offensive set, although both like to capitalize off of turnovers turning defense into offense. Keep an eye out for the matchups between the guards and the big men and Gilgeous-Alexander faces off against Brunson, and Holmgren against Towns.

This game also features four of the best defensive wings in the NBA in Anunoby, Bridges, Dort and Williams. Expect Gilgeous-Alexander and Brunson to see constant double-teams and physical coverage all night long.
