Thunder Rally Past Nets Despite Missing Star Players 105-86

The Oklahoma City Thunder showed why depth matters in the NBA, posting a convincing 105-86 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night at Paycom Center. Without reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and All-Star Jalen Williams, the Thunder leaned on their bench to secure their 43rd win of the season.

McCain Steps Up in Breakthrough Performance

Jared McCain delivered when it mattered most. The former 76ers guard, acquired earlier this month, erupted for a season-high 21 points in just his fifth game wearing Thunder colors. McCain looked comfortable in his reserve role, knocking down 7 of 12 shots from the field and connecting on 3 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc.

His performance provided the spark Oklahoma City desperately needed with multiple rotation players sidelined.

The Thunder’s injury woes run deep. Gilgeous-Alexander remains out with an abdominal strain and won’t be reevaluated for approximately one week. Williams, dealing with a strained right hamstring, faces a longer timeline—roughly two weeks before reassessment. Sixth man Ajay Mitchell joined the injury report after spraining his left ankle during the All-Star break.

Balanced Scoring Keeps Thunder Rolling

Oklahoma City compensated for the absent firepower with contributions across the roster. Chet Holmgren, fresh off his first All-Star appearance, chipped in 15 points. Isaiah Joe added 11, while Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort each contributed 10 points.

The Thunder’s defense set the tone early and never let up. Brooklyn managed just 10 points in the second quarter, the lowest-scoring period Oklahoma City has allowed all season. The Nets went the first 8½ minutes of that frame without a field goal, falling into a 17-point hole they couldn’t escape.

Lu Dort put an exclamation point on the second quarter, hitting a three-pointer while getting fouled. He calmly sank the free throw to push the lead to 43-30 with 2:18 remaining in the half.

Nets Struggle to Find Rhythm

Brooklyn’s offensive struggles were evident from the opening tip. Michael Porter Jr. led the Nets with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Nolan Traore added 17 points. But the team shot just 36.7% from the field and couldn’t overcome 20 turnovers.

The Thunder capitalized on Brooklyn’s mistakes, holding a 50-33 halftime advantage after limiting the Nets to 3-for-17 shooting in the second quarter.

Nikola Topic, the Thunder guard who recently made his NBA debut after battling testicular cancer, provided a memorable moment in the third quarter. He nailed a three-pointer and scored on a finger roll during a 7-3 run that extended Oklahoma City’s lead to 86-70.

Looking Ahead

The loss marked Brooklyn’s third consecutive defeat, dropping their record to 15-40. The Nets will look to bounce back Sunday when they visit Atlanta.

Oklahoma City (43-14) faces a tougher test Sunday, hosting Cleveland as they navigate the season’s stretch run without their top two scorers. But Friday’s performance proved the Thunder have the depth and defensive intensity to stay competitive even when key players are unavailable.
