The NBDL (National Basketball Development League), now known as the NBA G League, established new league offices in Greenville, S.C. The league comprised 31 teams. All are owned by an NBA team except for the independent Mexico City Capitanes. It received its present name in 2017 under a deal with Gatorade, becoming the first U.S. professional sports league named for an advertiser.

The Philadelphia 76ers won 120-106 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals after leading Boston three games to one, only to have the Celtics draw even. “Beat L.A.!” was the chant that resounded through Boston Garden late in the game. Boston fans wanted anyone to beat the Los Angeles Lakers. However, in six games, the Lakers beat the Sixers for the NBA title.

Averaging 18.9 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2.5 blocks in 58 games, Portland Center Bill Walton was named the NBA’s MVP for the 1977-78 season. Walton led his club to a 50-10 record before succumbing to multiple foot injuries. He played in his only NBA All-Star Game and was named First-Team Defense and All-NBA First Team. He was the first overall draft pick in 1974 for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Boston Center Dave Cowens dominated Game 1 of the NBA Finals against Phoenix, with 25 points and 21 rebounds. He helped the Celtics defeat the Suns, 98-87. Boston eventually took its 13th NBA title in six games.

Golden State notched an NBA Finals game record 17 steals during their 109-101 victory over Washington in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
