Detroit Pistons Thrash New York Knicks Behind Cade Cunningham’s Monster Double-Double
In the first meeting between these two teams following their matchup in last year’s first-round playoff series, the Detroit Pistons were able to get some revenge in a 121-90 thumping of the New York Knicks.
Cunningham’s Playmaking Paces Pistons Offense In Another Impressive Outing
It was the same story that it’s been all season for the Pistons, as their superstar Guard Cade Cunningham once again put on a show to lead Detroit to their 27th win of the season. The one-time All-Star finished with 29 points and dished out 13 assists, showcasing his much-improved playmaking ability this season.
That elite-level passing by Cunningham also bled over to the team overall, as the Pistons finished the game with 25 assists total. Those 25 assists led to a great outing from behind the arc for Detroit, as they rained in 16 threes at a very efficient 51% overall for the game.
The Pistons’ bench also provided a great offensive spark, with three players scoring 10+ points while coming off the bench. That offensive attack from the bench was led by fourth-year guard Jaden Ivey, who had his best game of the season so far. The former Purdue Boilermaker scored a season-high 16 points in the win for Detroit.
Knicks Lose Fourth Straight Game and Tumble Down the Standings
It’s been an ugly start to the new year for the Knicks, as their fourth straight loss against the Pistons tonight bumped them down to third in the Eastern Conference behind the surging Boston Celtics.
Tonight’s loss continued a worrying trend for New York, as superstar Jalen Brunson was the only Knicks player to show up. Last year’s Clutch Player of the Year scored 25 points for the Knicks, as both Brunson and Mikal Bridges were the only two starters to finish in double figures for New York.
Knicks star Center Karl-Anthony Towns had his worst outing of the season so far, as he only managed to score 6 points on 1-of-4 shooting from the floor. The Knicks also saw sparse production from their highly touted bench, as Miles McBride was the only Knicks bench player to score over 10 points in the loss.
Pistons Dream Season Continues
This season has been a long time coming for Detroit fans. The Pistons continue to prove themselves as not only one of the best teams in the NBA but also one of the best stories. Tonight’s win moved the Pistons record to 27-9, which gives them the second-best record in the NBA behind the reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
With the continued brilliance of Cunningham lifting the Pistons each night, and key players like Jaden Ivey beginning to find some consistency, Detroit is very much a viable title contender as we approach the halfway point of the NBA season.
