Nikola Jokic Set To Miss 4 Weeks With Left Knee Injury
The Denver Nuggets were holding their breath since Nikola Jokic went down with a knee injury last night against the Miami Heat. However, Shams Charania reported the star center: was diagnosed with a hyperextension in his left knee and will miss at least 4 weeks. The three-time NBA MVP’s knee ligaments are intact, with no significant damage.
Jokic Sidelined For 4 Weeks
Although losingย Jokicย is a significant blow, this outcome is considered the best-case scenario given the circumstances. Jokic now joins a growing list of injured Nuggets, including Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun. He was once again having an extraordinary season, averaging a triple-double and leading the league in both rebounds and assists. Sadly, his MVP hopes this year are likely dashed, as he needs to play 65 regular-season games and has only appeared in 31 so far.
Denverโs top priority now is to stay competitive in games and remain in the playoff race, putting health above all else. The Nuggets currently hold the third seed in the Western Conference with a 22-10 record, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, and remain among the conferenceโs elite teams. Jamal Murray will need to take on a much larger role in Jokicโs absence.
Jonas Valanciunas will step into the starting lineup as the full-time center while Jokic recovers. He has spent the past several years as a backup across various teams and hasnโt held a starting role since his stint with the New Orleans Pelicans from 2021 to 2023.
The Landscape In The West Changes
The Western Conference landscape could shift dramatically if the Denver Nuggets begin to slip from their top spot. The Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers are poised to climb higher in the standings, and although the playoffs are still some time away, these changes could have major implications when postseason arrives.
With Jokic sidelined, the Nuggetsโ upcoming schedule remains manageable. Most of their games are against Eastern Conference opponents, with only a few inter-conference matchups. Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun could rejoin the team toward the end of Denverโs seven-game road trip, providing much-needed reinforcements for head coach David Adelman.
What could have been a devastating setback for the Nuggets now appears far less dire; being without Jokic for only a couple of weeks is a major relief for fans. If Denver can get Aaron Gordon back and manage to play .500 basketball during this stretch, theyโll remain in strong position in the standings and be well-prepared when Jokic returns.
