Joel Embiid’s latest ailment, a right knee injury, worsens the Philadelphia 76ers’ existing struggles. Here’s why.

Joel Embiid’s Injury

Embiid suffered yet another injury. This time, an injury affects his right knee — possibly an effect of a previous right knee ailment. So far this season, Embiid has appeared in 31 of a possible 54 games.

Embiid’s Break

The Philadelphia 76ers ruled Embiid out of Wednesday’s home game against the New York Knicks, which ultimately resulted in a 138-89 blowout loss at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 32 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists — a wasted masterpiece. In contrast, Jose Alvarado led the Knicks with 26 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The 76ers’ decision marked his second straight absence, despite playing as recently as Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Phoenix Suns, where he led the 76ers with 33 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. He has been nursing a knee injury. He’ll turn 32 on March 16. The team reportedly opted for a cautious approach, taking a loss to give him an extended break.

Next Man Up

The Philadelphia 76ers’ next game will be played on Thursday, Feb. 19, against the Atlanta Hawks. Embiid will receive about a week of rest, a potential positive for his right knee.

The 76ers’ injury report also ruled out Quentin Grimes due to an undisclosed illness. The 76ers must turn their attention to other players, such as Andre Drummond, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Justin Edwards, to provide adequate support to Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. If the 76ers’ supporting cast steps up, Philly secure wins over the Hawks, along with the New Orleans Pelicans, next week following the NBA All-Star break.
