Golden State Warriors Star Draymond Green Warned By League Over Fan Confrontation
Another day, another dollar… just not one coming out of Draymond Green’s pocket this time. The Golden State Warriors’ resident instigator got into a bit of a tête-à -tête with a fan in New Orleans on Sunday, and the NBA has decided to play nice. Instead of slapping him with a fine, the league issued a simple warning, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Let’s be real, when Green is involved, you just wait for the fireworks. This time, the spark came from a courtside fan who decided to get creative with his heckling. The fan, later identified as 35-year-old Sam Green of New Orleans, started chanting “Angel Reese!” at Draymond.
At first, Draymond Green laughed it off. It was a decent chirp, referencing the WNBA star and former LSU rebounding machine. But the joke apparently wore thin.
When Heckling Crosses a Line
“It was a good joke at first, but you can’t keep calling me a woman,” Draymond Green said after the game. The four-time champ, who is expecting his fifth child, clearly felt the line had been crossed. “I got four kids, one on the way. You can’t keep calling me a woman.”
So, during a stoppage in the second quarter, Green did what he does best: he confronted the issue head-on. He marched over to the baseline, got in the fan’s face, and had a few words. The fan stood up, things got a little tense, and for a few seconds, it felt like we were headed for another “Malice at the Palace” moment, albeit a much smaller one.
Eventually, referee Courtney Kirkland stepped in to play peacemaker, and the fan was given a warning but, surprisingly, not the boot. He got to keep his prime real estate for the rest of the game.
A History Of Fan Interactions
This isn’t Green’s first rodeo with outspoken fans. He’s been fined $25,000 twice before for his “fan appreciation” moments—once for flipping the bird to Memphis fans and another time for some choice words directed at a fan in Dallas. Given his track record, a simple warning feels like getting away with murder.
Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr, ever the diplomat, didn’t seem too bothered by the exchange. “As long as it doesn’t escalate, it’s fine [for a player] to go over and have a discussion,” Kerr said. He did, however, throw a little shade at the arena staff, adding, “It would have been nice if security had gotten there a little bit earlier.” You think, Steve?
For Draymond, it’s just another chapter in his wild, unpredictable career. He avoids a financial hit this time, but you have to wonder when the next incident will be. With him, it’s never a matter of if, but when. For now, the Warriors can just be glad they left New Orleans with a 124-106 win and Green’s wallet still intact.
