The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to develop starting quarterbacks for other teams. Today, NBC Sports reported that former Jaguars QB Nathan Rourke signed a contract worth $600,000 a year with the Canadian Football League’s British Columbia Lions. This signing comes after Rourke was released by the Falcons earlier this preseason. Rourke’s payday pales in comparison to what he could earn on an NFL roster, but his new deal provides him the highest annual salary among current CFL players.
Rourke is a Canadian Football Success Story

His short run with the Falcons will go down as Nathan Rourke’s most recent NFL stint, but his ability to stick around on active rosters and practice squads should be applauded. Before spending a portion of the preseason with the Falcons, Rourke hovered around with the New York Giants, New England Patriots, and Jacksonville Jaguars. His CFL salary is likely to keep him in Canada until the end of 2026, but the Jaguars’ current QB2 situation could lead to Rourke returning to the NFL sooner rather than later. Of course, there is also a chance that Rourke leads the BC Lions to the Grey Cup which makes all of this a moot point.
Rourke Could Long-Term Answer to Jaguars’ QB2 Problem
Currently, Mac Jones appears to be the Jaguars’ leading candidate to support Trevor Lawrence during the regular season. However, Jones will be a free agent in 2025 since Jacksonville did not trade for Mac early enough to claim his fifth-year option. The former Patriot has excelled when given the opportunity this preseason. As such, he is highly unlikely to clear waivers if he is released after Jacksonville’s game against the Falcons on Friday. Nathan Rourke could be brought back as the team’s long-term backup if he develops further during his time as the CFL’s highest-paid player. However, other teams could offer Rourke a chance to start if he wins on Canada’s brightest stage.
Final Thoughts
As far as 2024 is concerned, Nathan Rourke’s huge payday is not a major concern for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The young QB has not performed well enough to warrant a permanent spot on an NFL roster for an extended period. However, Nathan Rourke has done enough for the Jaguars to rely on him in emergencies. Last season, Rourke made Jacksonville’s active roster multiple times because of injuries to Trevor Lawrence and CJ Beathard. Due to this, it wouldn’t be crazy if Trent Baalke signed Rourke again in 2025 to be the team’s backup signal-caller after gaining more pro experience elsewhere.
