Breaking News: Dodgers Superstar Mookie Betts Suffers Broken Hand in Royals Game 6/16/24

Los Angeles Dodgers Mookie Betts dazzled in his return from the IL.

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar and shortstop Mookie Betts had his left hand broken today during an at-bat. Betts, who was drafted back in 2011 by the Boston Red Sox, made his debut in 2014 when he was just 21 years of age. Ever since his debut, he’s put up solid numbers and has never had a season where he batted below a .260 average.

This injury will hurt the Dodgers, as they will lose their 31-year-old superstar, who will likely be out for a couple of months.

Timeline of Mookie Betts’ Injury

While the timeline for healing from a broken hand is usually around two months, that’s still two months the Dodgers will be without their shortstop, Mookie Betts. Betts, has been wearing the iconic Dodgers colors ever since his trade to them back in February of 2020.

The fracture was caused by a 98 MPH fastball thrown by Dan Altavilla, which hit Bett’s left hand in the bottom of the seventh inning of today’s Dodgers-Royals game. Betts was behind on a 1-2 count when the pitch hit him and forced his exit from the game. He was 0-3 for the day at the time of departure.

Who Will Take Mookie’s Place?

Whoever replaces Mookie Betts at shortstop will have some big cleats to fill. My guess is it’s going to be Cavan Biggio. Biggio, a utility player, makes the most sense for him to step into the shortstop role, a role he also played back in 2023 with the Blue Jays.

In an ironic turn of events, Cavan Biggio was traded to the Dodgers from the Blue Jays less than a week ago, making it seem like a pretty fortuitous trade for the Dodgers.

Other Dodgers Injuries

Besides Mookie Betts’ hand injury, Dave Roberts said that starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto has a strained rotator cuff and won’t be throwing for a couple of weeks. On top of that, Dodgers’ pitcher Michael Grove is also heading to the 15-day injured list for a right lat injury.

On the bright side, the Dodgers have some easy series’ coming up. They play a four-game set against the Rockies, two games against the Angels, and then, after a day of rest, a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

Here’s hoping Mookie Betts, Yamamoto, and Grove heal quickly and return to helping the Dodgers.
