New York Yankees Win 4-1 Over Reeling Boston Red Sox
The Yankees got a three-run home run from Amed Rosario in the first inning to jump out on the struggling Red Sox en route to a 4-1 victory. The most important thing about this game happened right at the beginning as Paul Goldschmidt had a 10-pitch at-bat two lead off the game for the Yankees.
That at bat probably had a lot to do with the Red Sox’s starting pitcher, Ranger Suarez, pitching only 4.2 innings. Although he gave up two doubles to Giancarlo Stanton, he was removed from the game just before Stanton batted for a third time. With the win, the Yankees improved to an American League-best 15-9. The Red Sox fell to 9-15. Do you think the Red Sox will get hot and get out of the basement?
Yankees and Red Sox Game Summary
This game started with a ten-pitch at-bat from Goldschmidt. He was leading off the game, and five batters later, after Aaron Judge and Stanton both got on base, he hit a three-run home run. Rosario also hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning. He drove in the first four runs for the Yankees and was then removed from the game in the fifth inning.
Another big story from this game was that Boston’s starting pitcher, Ranger Suarez, was removed from the game after just 4.2 innings pitched. This game was billed as a battle between aces, with Max Fried starting for the Yankees. Fried kept up his end of the bargain; Suarez did not. The rest of this game was neither of these games scoring much. The Red Sox cannot hit.
Shutouts
Last night, the Yankees shut out the Red Sox on their way to a 4-0 victory. That was the fifth shutout the Yankees have had so far this season, which happened on April 21. That is very good. It is a fact that if a team does not score, it will not win.
Fried’s Start
The Yankees should win all of the games started by Fried. However, they lost the last two games he started, including him getting treated roughly by the Kansas City Royals. In this game, he pitched eight innings, struck out nine, gave up only three hits, and walked two. He out-pitched Suarez, and it does not get easier for the Red Sox; they face Cam Schlittler tomorrow. For tonight, this was a huge performance from Fried.
Red Sox Pitching
The Boston Red Sox are struggling. Many of the players in their lineup are not hitting. However, their real problem is on the pitcher’s mound. Garrett Crochet, their would-be Cy Young candidate, has been struggling. Sonny Gray, one of their big free-agent signings in the offseason, went on the injured list just before this series.
Their starting pitchers are also not giving them length. Just see Connelly Early last night and Suarez tonight. As a result, the Red Sox have been using their bullpen a bunch. They called up Eduardo Rivera from AA to pitch in this series. He got in the game tonight and pitched well. That gave the higher-leverage Red Sox relievers a chance to rest in this second game of the series.
1903
On this date in 1903, the Yankees played the first game in franchise history. They were the New York Highlanders, and they lost 3-1 to the Washington Senators. They became the Yankees in 1913 and have done a lot of winning since then, winning 27 World Series.
