New York Yankees Lose To Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 As Offense Goes Cold Again
The Yankees lost this game 2-0. Starting Pitcher Carlos Rodon was not as sharp as his fans wanted him to be. David Cone said on the television broadcast that location is often the last thing to come back after a long injury delay. So, that may be what is going on.
The Yankees should have had a big advantage in this game with Rodon starting for them and the Toronto Blue Jays using an opener. However, it really did not work out that way as Braydon Fisher struck out three in the first inning and Rodon allowed a run. We have seen how teams having bullpen games often have a pitching advantage. Do you think this is the case?
Yankees and Blue Jays Game Summary
The Yankees were hoping for a better start from Rodon. He again struggled with control, which is the last thing to come back after a long injury layoff. He was hot and cold in the first inning. He struck out two and got a third out on a groundout. However, he walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who came into the game 11-of-18 off him, and he stole second base and scored on a double by Daulton Varsho.
Aaron Judge grounded out in the third inning, which was important because he had struck out in the previous six at-bats. In the seventh inning, George Springer hit a solo home run. That made it 2-0 Blue Jays.
Rain Days
In baseball, teams do not play in the rain. There are rain delays and rainouts. Why do baseball teams not play in the rain? There are two main reasons. First, when it rains, the grass is somewhat wet. This creates a hazard for those who are playing. They could slip on the wet grass. This hazard affects all outdoor sports when there is inclement weather.
Second, unique to baseball, is that the moisture on the ball can make it difficult for the pitcher to grip the ball. Pitchers require a firm grip on the baseball to throw their pitches. That is why there is often a rosin bag on the back of the mound. When it rains, the moisture makes it difficult to grip the baseball in the way the pitchers want.
Close Games
All three prior games in this series have been decided by one run. In fact, the Yankees have had four straight games decided by one run. These close games take a long time to play and require a bunch of relief pitchers. We have seen this with the Yanks as they have used five relief pitchers in each of the first three games of the season. The Yanks needed to win via a blowout.
Roster Moves
Tomorrow, the Yankees are expected to activate both Gerrit Cole and Jose Caballero from the IL. This will require the team to make two roster moves to free up space. There is some thought that Anthony Volpe, who has played well for the Yankees, might get sent down to the minors. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what the team does.
The team has been waiting for Cole, in particular, to come back for a long time. For Cole, it is likely that Yovanny Cruz will be demoted. That is too bad because Cruz did a nice job in his MLB debut last night by striking out three in two scoreless innings pitched. He also pitched in this game, the first relief pitcher for the team tonight.
