New York Yankees Lose To Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 and Do Not Right the Ship As Luis Gil Starts
The Yankees had not scored a run in 17 innings heading into this game. They broke that streak early, but lost this game 5-3. This game was played at Tropicana Field. It has been rebuilt after being destroyed by Hurricane Milton. The Rays did not play there last season; they played at the Yankees’ spring training complex at Steinbrenner Field.
Also noteworthy in this game is that Luis Gil started it for the Yankees. The pitcher was the Rookie of the Year in 2024, but hurt his lat last year. The start of his season was delayed in 2025 by the injury. When he did come back, he threw hard but struggled with control. He has been wild so far this season. He started this year in AAA. Do you think Gil will be able to pitch well and add to the Yankees’ rotation?
Yankees and Rays Game Summary April 10, 2026
This game featured some of the fastest players in all of baseball. It is said speed does not slump, so this is a meaningful element. Speed, once a player gets on base, puts pressure on the defense by making the player a threat to steal. Speed actually helps players get on base to begin with. Even a ground ball on the infield could become a hit. On defense, speed enables a player to cover more ground and make more plays.
Chandler Simpson of the Rays is probably the fastest player in professional baseball. He is off to a great start to the season. He is hitting .391 with a triple and 5 stolen bases. Amazingly, he has been caught stealing. He has also grounded into a double play, though that is a rarity for a fast player.
The Yankees also have some fast players. They include former Tampa Bay Ray Jose Caballero and Jazz Chisholm Jr. The latter has declared he would like to hit 50 home runs this year and steal 50 bases. He is struggling at the plate, but he has 5 stolen bases.
Luis Gil Makes Start
Gil started this game for the Yankees. He was the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year. Last season, however, he hurt his lat muscle, and when his season finally started, he threw fast but struggled with accuracy. It would be very good for the Yankees if he could return to form. That would give the team with great starting pitching yet another great starting pitcher. Early returns suggest he may struggle.
Gil made one start for the AAA affiliate of the Yankees, Scranton Wilkes-Barre. He walked four batters in 4.2 innings. He also gave up a home run. He allowed three runs. All were earned. He struck out six batters.
He was equally uninspiring this evening. In four innings, he gave up three runs, walked three, and struck out only two. He will need to pitch better if he wants to stay in the rotation.
Tropicana Field
The Yankees played the game on the road at Tropicana Field. The stadium is known as the “Trop,” and there is big news there. First, the Rays are playing there this season after they had to play last season at the Yankees’ spring training and minor league complex.
The move was necessitated by Hurricane Milton’s destruction of the “Trop.” Second, the Rays spent hundreds of millions of dollars renovating the stadium. This is strange because the Rays’ owners want to build a new stadium. The Rays came into this game 5-7, so returning to their old home has not really helped them.
