New York Yankees Lose To New York Mets 6-3 In Second Game Of Subway Series; Carlos Rodon Struggles

May 10, 2026; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon (55) throws a pitch in the first inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

The Yankees hoped they would get a better outing from Carlos Rodon in his second start for the team. After three good innings, he lost the plate in the fourth inning and fell apart. He was not that much better in this game and fell apart in the third inning. The Yankees lost this game 6-3. It was a good sign that on Friday night, Jazz Chisholm Jr. had three hits. Anthony Volpe had three walks.

With Max Fried going on the IL, the return of Gerrit Cole, probably after making two more starts in the minor leagues, is more important than it was. No longer will a member of the Yankees’ starting pitching rotation, probably Ryan Weathers, go to the bullpen. Instead, Cole will fill the hole created by Fried’s injury. Do you think it is a luxury to have so many starting pitchers?

Yankees and Mets Game Summary

As the Mets are suffering injury after injury, it was Starting Pitcher Clay Holmes who broke his fibula on Friday after getting hit by a 111 miles per hour line drive off the bat of Spencer Jones. It is unlikely they will compete this season. With an exorbitant payroll, one has to question whether Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza will keep his job much longer.

In the second inning, the Yankees scored a run and led 1-0. The Mets scored two runs in the third inning on a wild pitch by Rodon. That was after two strikeouts, Rodon went double, walk, walk, two-run wild pitch. Miraculously, Rodon stayed in the game. In the fifth inning, Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run. It was 3-2 Mets.

However, the Mets got that run back on a two-run double from Mark Vientos. The score was 5-2, Mets. In the seventh inning, Aaron Judge doubled, and then the Mets dropped a fly ball. The Yankees scored. The Mets got that run back in the seventh inning on a groundout. It was 6-3 Mets. That was the final score of the game.

Roster Moves

Before the game, the Yankees placed Max Fried on the 15-day Injured list. That turned out better than Yankees fans feared. Anytime you hear a pitcher has a sore elbow, you think he needs Tommy John surgery and will be out for a year.

Elmer Rodríguez was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday in a corresponding move. He has already started two games for the Yankees, and this is his second call-up.

Catching Woes

The Yankees have a problem at catcher. Austin Wells is hitting below .200. So is his backup, JC Escarra. Both are left-handed hitters. What that means is that the team cannot platoon players at that position based on the pitching match-up.

One would like to sit Wells against left-handed pitchers; he is hitting .128 against them, however, they cannot because the backup is left-handed as well. He also cannot hit. The Yankees are very likely to make a trade for a right-handed-hitting catcher.

When To Take a Pitcher Out

Rodon was cruising along in his second start of the season after coming back from injury. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out the first two batters in the third inning. Then he surrendered a double, a walk, another walk, and a two-run wild pitch. He threw 39 pitches in the third inning. Then, in the fourth inning, with two outs and two strikes, he walked a batter and allowed a double. The Mets led 3-1, and Rodon was pulled from the game.
