New York Yankees Lose Rubber Game 1-0 and Nearly Get No-Hit By Athletics
The Yankees split the first two games of the home series with the Athletics. They were hoping for a win but did not get it. Ryan Weathers was the starting pitcher for them. He had two previous starts for the Yankees before this one. Neither of them was good, though he did strike out 7 in 4.1 innings. The Yanks were hoping for him to bounce back in his third start of the season. He did.
A growing problem for the Yankees is that the bottom of their lineup is not hitting. The quandary is who to play at third base. Ryan McMahon or Amed Rosario? McMahon is a great fielder, but a bad hitter. Also, who plays shortstop with Anthony Volpe out? José Caballero? He is a great baserunner who is rarely on base. What do you think the Yankees should do?
Game Summary Yankees vs. Athletics April 9, 2026
It took a long time in this game before there was any action. The score was 0-0 through six innings, and the Yankees did not have a hit. The Athletics finally scored in the seventh inning. That said, the Yankees’ starting pitcher, Weathers, had a 1-2-3 eighth inning and more than 100 pitches. 101 to be exact. He drew rave reviews from the Yankees announcers. Unfortunately, his stellar pitching effort was wasted by the ineffective Yankees offense.
No hits
The Yankees had no hits through six innings. They finally got a hit in the seventh inning. Counting the lack of offensive production in last night’s game, the Yankees have been no-hit for more than the last nine innings, 11.2 innings, in fact.
That is more than a complete game. While the team is 8-4 and currently has the best record in the American League, they give new meaning to the term offensive futility. The hardest thing to do in sports indeed is to hit a round ball with a round bat, but this is ridiculous. It is great that they are getting good pitching.
The Best Kept Secret
Maybe the best-kept secret in all of baseball is the starting pitcher for the Athletics, Jeffrey Springs. Not only did he no-hit the Yankees through six innings today, but he had the seventh-lowest earned run average in the American League last season.
He was drafted in the 30th round and given only a $1,000 signing bonus, but he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He lived up to that billing today and certainly is worth more than $1,000. You should know his name.
Hitless Wonders
Because Springs is a left-handed pitcher, the Yankees started an odd lineup. Rosario played second base and led off. Jazz Chisholm Jr. got a partial day off (he did run for Giancarlo Stanton in the eighth inning. He stayed in the game as the designated hitter, then he took over at second base.
Also, Randall Grichuk was in left field for New York. He was 0-of-3 with 3 strikeouts. He is now 0-of-5 on the season. He might be just about done as a baseball player. He is not the only rostered Yankee who is hitless this season. The backup catcher, JC Escarra, is 0-of-10 on the season. The Yankees like his defense, so he will stick around. However, the Grichuk experiment may be nearing its end. If so, look for Jasson Dominguez to be called up.
