New York Yankees Lose 4-3 To Milwaukee Brewers In 10 Innings As They Fail To Take Advantage Of Another Strong Start From Cam Schlittler
The Yankees started Cam Schlittler, a day after they were dominated by Jacob Misiorowski, who routinely threw the ball in excess of 100 MPH. The Yankees were glad to be done with him, but faced Kyle Harrison in this game. Even though he has not allowed more than two runs in six consecutive starts, they lost the game 4-3 in extra innings on a bonehead play.
Spencer Jones made his major league debut on Friday as the designated hitter. Last night, he was the starting centerfielder. Though he walked impressively on Friday, he was still looking for his first hit. However, the story of this game was the Yankee starting pitcher, Cam Schlittler, who pitched well. Do you think Schlittler will win the Cy Young Award?
Yankees against the Brewers Game Summary
This game started, and right away the Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a long Paul Goldschmidt solo home run. Goldschmidt was also responsible for the Yankees’ second run in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, he hit a hot shot to the Milwaukee third baseman, Luis Rengifo.
Both Schlittler and Harrison pitched well. Therefore, we got a pitcher’s duel. In the first four innings, Schlittler had only allowed one hit. For the sixth inning, the Brewers brought in Chad Patrick. Patrick was second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting last season and is having just about as good a season this year.
In the seventh inning, Brent Headrick relieved Schlittler, and he was greeted promptly by former Yankee Jake Bauers with a home run. However, after walking the next batter, he got out of the inning. In the eighth inning, the Brewers tied the game at 2.
The game went to extra innings. In the tenth inning, Ryan McMahon singled, and Max Schumann, who came in to run for Paul Goldschmidt, scored. In the 10th inning, Milwaukee also tied the game at 3 on a Jackson Chourio infield single. Wilson Contras hit a sacrifice fly, and the game was over.
The bonehead play was Milwaukee runners on first and second with one out. The Yankees brought in Tim Hill, who fielded a weak ground ball from Brice Turang and unsuccessfully threw to third, instead of getting the sure out at first.
He hit the runner sliding into third, and the third baseman, perhaps proving a poor decision, was not ready for the throw. The comedy of errors capped a rough night for the Yankees’ bullpen in which they blew a 2-0 lead.
A Grusome Injury
In the game on Friday, Milwaukee left fielder Brandon Lockridge slid into the wall trying to make a catch. As he slid, his right knee hit the concrete part of the wall. He lacerated his knee so badly that the doctors could see his bone and tendons. The knee was so swollen from the contact with the wall that the doctors could not take an MRI.
Amazingly, he did not break his kneecap, and the team says he will be back in 10 days. The injury was gruesome, and Lockridge was carted off the field.
An Awful Trade
The Red Sox traded away the starting pitcher to the Brewers before the season, He was a top pitching prospect for San Francisco and was an important part of the trade that sent slugger Rafael Devers to San Francisco. Boston then traded him along with infielder David Hamilton, left-handed pitcher Shane Drohan, for infielder Caleb Durbin, infielder Andruw Monasterio, infielder Anthony Seigler, and a Competitive Balance Round B Draft pick.
All three of the players Milwaukee got are on their major league roster. In Boston, meanwhile, the players they got are struggling or are not on the major league roster.
Rodon To Return
Carlos Rodon will return to the Yankees’ starting pitching rotation today. He has missed the entire season so far. The Yankees also announced that they are shutting Luis Gil down for three weeks with right shoulder inflammation. The rule of thumb is that a pitcher, who is shut down for a period of time, will also need to build up for that amount of time. So, Gil will be out of the rotation for at least 6 weeks.
It is a shame he is hurt again, and the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year missed the first half of last season with a Lat strain.
