Yankees, Mets and Dodgers Showing Interest In Brendan Donovan
The St. Louis Cardinals could trade some of their top hitters to acquire young talent this offseason. Among the top names available will be Second Baseman Brendan Donovan, who is reportedly on the trade block. The Yankees are among many contending teams that have shown interest in the former All-Star.
Yankees Among Teams Showing Interest
Jon Morosi and Mark Feinsand have both reported that the New York Yankees are among a list of teams that could complete a trade for Donovan this offseason. The Yankees have had interest in the utility man for years, and this could finally be the time when they strike a deal. With an ample amount of young pitching in the major league and minor leagues, they have exactly what the Cardinals are looking for.
Potential names could be Will Warren, Elmer Rodriguez Cruz, and Luis Gil. If the Cardinals are looking to fill their lineup with more young talent, Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones would be atop the list.
Donovan would fit perfectly in the Bronx and would presumably be their leadoff hitter, which they desperately need. The Yankees must get more players on base in front of Aaron Judge, which is something that Donovan excels at.
His career low on base percentage is .342 (2024), with the highest coming in 2022 (.394). After seeing what Cody Bellinger did this past season with the Yankees, bringing in Donovan would allow Aaron Boone to mix and match his lineups and put Donovan at multiple infield and outfield positions. He is also a cheap option under contract until the 2027 season, which is what makes him so expensive if he were to be traded this offseason.
Other Suitors For Donovan
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets were also named potential suitors for Donovan. The Dodgers would use Donovan in multiple roles, mainly in the outfield, and possibly at second or third base if they do not sign another infielder. It remains to be seen whether he’d lead off or be a tough out lower in the lineup.
The Mets are another possible destination for Donovan. Their opening at second base suits him well, and his low strikeout rate would help the lineup ahead of Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. Top prospect Jonah Tong could also be available in a trade.
It will be interesting to see how many players the Cardinals trade this offseason, with Donovan expected at the forefront. Nolan Arenado and Lars Nootbaar are also likely to be trade candidates as the team looks to replenish young talent.
