The Yankees Have Talked To Brewers Regarding Freddy Peralta And Trevor Megill
While the Yankees didn’t make a move during the Winter Meetings, Brian Cashman remains active in trade talks to improve his roster. The Yankees have reached out to the Milwaukee Brewers regarding ace Freddy Peralta and Trevor Megill, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Cashman is looking to add to his bullpen and rotation, so he’d be checking two boxes in the matter of one trade.
Yankees Interested In Two All-Stars
Freddy Peralta would be a great option for the Yankees and is a cost-controlled pitcher who would slot in the top of their rotation. Peralta was one of the best pitchers in the entire National League last season, and wouldn’t cost the Yankees any of their top prospects. Last season in Milwaukee, he had a 2.70 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He’s been one of the most consistent starters for the Brewers, and Milwaukee is reportedly open to trading its Ace this Winter.
On top of Peralata, the Yankees are reportedly interested in All-Star closer Trevor Megill, after trading for Milwaukee’s top bullpen last offseason in Devin Williams. Megill would be amazing in New York’s bullpen, giving them yet another high velocity arm that strikes opposing batters out at a high rate. He is going to cost a lot, given his team control for many years.
With how much free agent relievers are going for in today’s market, trades are going to be even more expensive. Megill has an elite fastball that sits in the upper 90s and can get up to over 100 miles per hour.
The Market Is Moving Extremely Slow
The Winter Meetings were historically quiet this year, but a lot of moves will be made before Christmas with free agents looking to find their new homes in the coming weeks. It sounds like Cody Bellinger is what’s holding the Yankees up, as he is the forefront of their plans. New York is holding firm on a short-term contract, while Scott Boras is pushing for a longer deal, as he does for all his clients.
Brian Cashman knows that Bellinger’s contract could age poorly the longer it goes on, and is clearly being very careful in negotiations. He said that New York remains engaged on all fronts, even as they wait for his decision. It’ll be interesting to see if other teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets jump into the sweepstakes and drive up the price to a point where New York has to pivot to someone else on the open market.
