New York Yankees Beat Texas Rangers 4-2 Behind Max Fried
The Yankees resumed their winning ways with a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers. This happened after the Yankees made a roster move by sending Luis Gil to the minor leagues and recalling Jasson Dominguez.
The Yankees benefited in this game by hitting two home runs in the third inning. Ben Rice and Aaron Judge hit them. Rice is developing into a star; Judge is already there. He was not a first-round draft pick; he was developed by the Yankees after being selected out of Dartmouth College. Do you think Rice will continue to develop into a star?
Yankees and Rangers Game Summary
The game started well for the Yankees. Rice hit a two-run home run, and then Judge hit a home run. The Yankees took a 3-0 lead. The Rice home run should have been a three-run home run, but Jose Caballero was picked off of first base. Rice is putting together a great month of April.
In the fourth inning, Jazz Chisolm Jr. hit a solo home run, and the Yankees were leading 4-0. The home run was Chisholm’s third in the last seven games, and the three home runs he had given up to this point were a career high for the Texas starting pitcher, Jack Leiter.
Hot
It is a good thing the Rangers play in a stadium with a retractable roof. It was 87 degrees Fahrenheit already. And there. The weather is so hot and often bad in Arlington, so it is good they have a retractable dome. It did not used to be that way. It was probably miserable to play there before they moved into Globe Life Field.
ABS Challenges
Much was made of the so-called ‘robo umps’ with the Automated Balls and Strikes system (ABS). The way it works is that every pitch is monitored relative to the strike zone. Teams can challenge a call by the home plate umpire twice a game by tapping their hat or helmet. They have two seconds to make the tap. Teams can be successful upon review, or not, and they can be incorrect twice a game.
The reception among fans of the ABS has been positive, though the new system has definitely had the effect of slowing down games. There is an emerging strategy developing around challenges. Teams do not want to use them up early in the game, and certain players will be told not to challenge. That will affect emotional players negatively. Players like Chisholm Jr.
Soon, it will be most likely that only catchers will challenge pitches. Teams can also request reviews of plays on the bases. That system has existed for a couple of years.
A Familiar Face
Leiter is the son of former Yankee Pitcher Al Leiter. While the Yankees treated the young starting pitcher harshly, there are significant ties between him and the club. First of all, Al Leiter was in attendance. Jack used to attend Yankee games when he was a youngster. He asked his preschool teachers if everyone’s father was a Major League Baseball pitcher. The Yankees actually drafted Jack Leiter out of high school, but he opted to attend college at Vanderbilt instead.
