New York Yankees Beat Texas Rangers 3-2 In a Game With Great Pitching and Fantastic Defense
The Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 in a game that featured a great starting pitching matchup between Jacob deGrom and Cam Schlittler. There were also several outstanding defensive plays by the likes of Evan Carter, Josh Smith, and Cody Bellinger.
Speaking of Bellinger, he has underwhelmed a bit since he signed a big free-agent contract with the Yankees, but he probably took away a run with a great defensive play. He drove in the Yanks’ first run, at the top of the first inning, when he doubled off the top of the outfield wall, driving in Aaron Judge, who motored in from first base. Do you think Bellinger deserves his big contract?
Yankees and Texas Rangers Game Summary April 28
There was not a lot of scoring in this game early on. There was great defense and a fantastic pitching matchup. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bellinger doubled in Judge. If it were not for the great defensive plays by both teams, there would have been more runs scored in the early going. Both pitchers benefited from the defensive plays, and they seemed to settle down a bit as the game went on.
As the game moved on, both pitchers found a groove. It became clear that this game was going to be decided by the bullpens. When the Rangers turned to their bullpen in the seventh inning, the Yanks scolded three balls. That included a solo home run by Austin Wells. The Yankees doubled their lead. Then, Judge hit a long home run in the ninth inning.
Yankees Roster Moves
Today, the Yanks put slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the Injured List. Stanton said he was hoping to avoid the injured list and that his injured right calf muscle was feeling better, but the team needed the roster spot. The team called up infielder Max Schuemann. This is not a one-for-one swap as Schumann can play the field, and is not nearly as good a hitter.
Schumann was probably only going to be up with the big team for a day, because the Yanks also announced that the starting pitcher tomorrow will be Elmer Rodriguez. The Yankees got Rodriguez from the Boston Red Sox in the trade that sent them Catcher Carlos Narvarez. Rodriguez looked great in Spring Training and has been tearing up the minor leagues.
Cam Sclittler For the Cy Young
People may not be able to say his name without cursing, but don’t look now, Schlittler is building his case for the Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the American League. He threw consistent first strikes and was consistently ahead of the batter 0-2. Through his first four innings, he did not allow a three-ball count.
Tonight, he burnished his resume more by out-dueling deGrom. Schlittler pitched 6 innings, striking out eight batters and allowing no runs. He walked two batters. He did give up two walks, which pushed his season total to five. That is against 49 strikeouts, an unbelievable ratio.
Shuffling the Yankee Bullpen
The first pitcher out of the Yankee bullpen was Brian Headrick. It says a lot that he was brought into a close game, right after a great pitching performance by Schlittler. Fernando Cruz came in to pitch the eighth inning he immediately gave up a single, then he walked the second batter, putting the tying runs on base. Then, on a bunt, he fell on his rear and, while sliding, threw the runner at third base out. He struck out the next two guys.
