New York Yankees Lose To Texas Rangers 3-0 As Youngster Elmer Rodriguez Makes His Major League Debut
The Yankees completed their road trip by failing to sweep the Texas Rangers and losing 3-0. Elmer Rodriguez made his Major League debut in the game. There was a bunch of news from this game. Not only did Rodriguez pitch well in his debut, but the Yankees designated a veteran for assignment, and a Yankees legend is back in the game.
The news just kept coming in this game. The Texas Rangers starting pitcher, Nathan Eovaldi, hit Jasson Dominguez in the fourth inning, and Dominguez was removed from the game. He was just called up yesterday. However, the focus was on Rodriguez. He threw very well. Do you think he will add to the Yankee starting rotation?
Yankees and Texas Rangers Game Summary
This game was a 0-0 tie through five innings, as Rodriguez was good in his debut, and the Yankees can never hit against Eovaldi. The Rangers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Rodriguez was removed. At this point, the game was looking like another game that the bullpens could decide.
In the seventh inning, Texas scored one more run to take a 3-0 lead. The Yanks could do nothing against Eovaldi or the bullpen. Nevertheless, the Yanks had a successful road trip. They won all three series.
Elmer Rodriguez’s Debut
One of the two vaunted Yankees’ young guns, Elmer Rodriguez, debuted in this game. He pitched well, but when he left, he had just given up his first two Major League runs. He pitched four innings, gave up four hits, and struck out three. He also hit a batter. He is expected to remain in the Yankees’ starting rotation until Carlos Rodon returns, so he will likely get two more starts. The other big young gun for the Yankees is Carlos LaGrange.
Roster Moves
To make room for Rodriguez, the Yankees designated Randal Grichuk for assignment. That means Grichuk will not play for the team again this season, though he is free to sign with another club if he wants. This was a somewhat surprising move as the team opted to keep Max Schuman on the major league roster. Schumann offers defensive flexibility, as he can play several positions.
Grichuk started 0-of-15, but he had been coming on recently. He played well in left field, but the team wants Dominguez to play there. The team’s fans hope his left elbow contusion heals and he can play. He had an X-ray taken today, and will be evaluated further when the team returns to New York after this game.
Cole Pitches
Gerrit Cole made a rehabilitation start for the Somerset Patriots. In a good sign, Cole was able to get through 5.2 innings. He threw 60 pitches. He walked three, gave up three hits, and had three strikeouts. The big thing was that Cole threw 60 pitches. He will make several more rehabilitation starts in the minor leagues, gradually increasing his pitch count.
He is on track for a late May or early June return, at which point, both Rodon and Cole will be in the starting rotation for the team.

The Philadelphia Phillies hired Don Mattingly as their interim manager. That is funny because his son is his boss. Preston Mattingly is the General Manager of the Phillies, though President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski, makes all the baseball decisions for the team.
The elder Mattingly is, of course, a beloved Yankee legend. He was a Gold Glove first baseman and a Most Valuable Player winner for the team. He was the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins. The Phillies fired Manager Rob Thomson yesterday.
