New York Yankees Beat Baltimore Orioles 7-2 Behind a Strong Pitching Performance From Will Warren
The Yankees should be favored in each of the games in this four-game series with the Orioles. They won the game on Friday night 7-2. They used a five-run second inning and got a big pitching performance from Will Warren, who lowered his earned run average to a wild 2.39. When Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon come back, Warren will be the fifth starter in the Yankees’ starting rotation.
The Yankees look to widen their lead in the dog-eat-dog American League East by winning the series against the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore is ripe for the taking, having played a doubleheader on the day before this series began. Do you think the Yankees will be able to win the next three games of this series?
Yankees and Orioles Game Summary
The Yankees and Orioles traded runs in this game for one and a half innings. Then, the Yanks use the long ball, a three-run home run by Ben Rice and a solo shot by Jose Caballero. The game state that way, a 5-1 Yankee lead, until the team traded runs in the seventh inning. Of note, the Yanks rallied for their run with two outs and two strikes. Not only did they score a run, but they left the bases loaded.
Their run in the seventh inning was a back-breaker for the Orioles. The Yankees got another insurance run in the eighth inning, to make the final score 7-2 Yanks. One down, three to go.
Bullpen Games In the Majors
Baltimore played a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. In the second game, they played a bullpen game. That meant that they did not have a starting pitcher; instead, they opened the game with a pitcher out of the bullpen. They followed with more bullpen pitchers. Teams do this when their schedule is so compressed that they do not have enough starting pitchers for the schedule.
It is thought that having a bullpen game might give that team an advantage. The theory is that teams that do this are cycling through pitchers so frequently that the fresh arms and new looks give the team the advantage. That didn’t work out for the Orioles yesterday; they lost the game with the Houston Astros 11-5 and surrendered 5 runs in the first inning. It took them until yesterday afternoon to name a starting pitcher for this game. Cade Povich is a left-handed pitcher with a very respectable 2.18 earned run average.
On a Roll
The Yankees just completed a successful 7-2 road trip. Even though they lost the last game 3-0, they came back home in first place in the American League East by 1.5 games. They are one of only three teams in the American League who are over .500. They will be favored in all four games with Baltimore in this series, sometimes heavily so.
It will be interesting to see if they can take advantage of a favorable home series against a weaker opponent to further pad their divisional lead.
Warren Unbelievable
Warren pitched well, his third consecutive quality start. In this game, he pitched six and a third innings. He struck out 9 batters. He only gave up one earned run, a home run to Pete Alonso, though he did allow one unearned run. In a continued good sign, he walked only one batter. His control through seven starts has been impeccable.
