New York Yankees Lose 3-2 To Athletics As Bats Go Cold

Apr 7, 2026; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Will Warren (29) pitches in the first inning against the Athletics at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are coming back after defeating the Athletics last night, but they could not beat them again tonight. Will Warren, the starting pitcher for the Yanks, struggled a bit. He pitched only 4.2 innings. He gave up two runs and left the game with two runners on base. Thankfully for him, Tim Hill needed only one pitch to strand those runners.

It seems the announcers say that Warren has a good start every time. However, his starts are always a struggle, as he nibbles at the strike zone, and his starts always seem to end with runners on base. While he left this game giving the Yankees a chance to win, do you think he will ever develop into a star pitcher?

Game Summary Of Yankees Against Athletics

The second game between the Yankees and Athletics was maddening for Yankees fans. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Athletics tied the game in the 4th inning. It seemed like the experienced Yankees would beat the young Athletics handily. However, the game did not unfold that way. It was another close one that set the Yankees up for more late-inning heroics.

The score in the game remained 2-2 into the eighth inning as both bullpens did a good job. The Yankees’ bullpen pitched four scoreless innings last night. Brent Rooker hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to put the Athletics out in front, 3-2. The Yanks had the bottom of their lineup up.

Happy Birthday, Jeff McNeil

Today is Athletics Second Baseman Jeff McNeil’s 34th birthday. He absolutely kills the Yankees, so he must have been looking forward to this game. In his career, he hit .343, with 36 hits, 3 home runs, and 18 runs scored in 28 games against New York.

In this game, he scored a run and had a run batted in. He also doubled in the eighth inning. Even Joe Girardi, who was doing the color commentary of the game, remarked that McNeil kills the Yankees. He would know; he is a former manager. Happy birthday, indeed.

Luis Severino Settles Down After Being Greeted Rudely

The Yankees scored two runs in the first inning off former Pitcher Luis Severino. He threw 32 pitches in the first inning. He gave up three hits and walked two. He was greeted rudely by the Yankees. In all, he threw 100 pitches in five innings. He settled down and seemed to get stronger as he went along. He threw some of his fastest pitches near the end of his outing. When he was with the Yankees, he was a flamethrower with all his pitches in the upper 90s.

This Makes No Sense

In the sixth inning of the game, the Athletics used three players in one spot in the lineup. First, Darell Hernaiz pinch-hit for Carlos Cortes. Then, after he singled, Denzel Clarke ran for him. That seems like too many players early in the game for one spot in the lineup. With MLB rosters so constrained, that is probably a waste of talent. Clarke stayed on to play center field. He is an elite defender there.

There were some lineup oddities for the Yankees as well. Ryan McMahon, who is a third baseman, started at shortstop. The hero from last night, Amed Rosario, started at third base. Jose Cabaerllo, who is struggling offensively, got the night off.
