Will Warren Leads New York Yankees As They Try To Win Game 1
Will Warren attempted to lead the second-place Yankees over the second-place Phillies. The Yankees lost the game 12-5. However, the most important thing that happened today was that Will Warren and the rest of the Yankees got an upgrade at third base as the Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies.
Will Warren used the strikeout effectively in this game. He was leading all rookie pitchers in strikeouts. Nevertheless, until the Yankees stop making mistakes, they will continue to have problems against any good team. It does not matter how well Will Warren or other Yankee pitchers pitch. Will the Yankees be able to upgrade their roster before the trade deadline to minimize mistakes?
Lineup Summary
The Phillies had Trea Turner as the shortstop, batting leadoff. Kyle Schwarber was the designated hitter, batting second. Bryce Harper was the first baseman, batting third. Nick Castellanos was the right fielder, batting fourth. J.T. Realmuto was the catcher and batted fifth. Brandon Marsh was the center fielder and batted sixth. Max Kepler played left field and batted seventh. Otto Kemp was the third baseman and batted eighth. Edmundo Sosa replaced him defensively in the eighth inning. For the Yankees, Trent Grisham batted first and was the center fielder. Aaron Judge was the right fielder who batted second. Cody Bellinger was the left fielder and batted third. Giancarlo Stanton was the designated hitter who batted fourth. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the second baseman who batted fifth.
Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman, batting sixth. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted seventh. Anthony Volpe was the shortstop and batted eighth. Oswald Peraza was the third baseman, batting ninth. Ben Rice pinch-hit for him in the seventh inning. Jotbit Vivas came in to play third base.
News and Notes: Will Warren Start
Peraza playing third base is about to become a thing of the past. The offensively challenged baseman, who has a .147 batting average and three home runs, is supposedly a good fielder, but he has been front and center in the Yankees’ recent defensive struggles. Neither he nor Vivas will play much going forward.
The Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon, who is going to be there every game for the Yankees. The Yankees did not trade much for him in minor league pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz. The Yankees were on Apple TV+, and so, the game was not on in many places. Not many people could watch Will Warren or the many stars playing the game.
Game Reaction
It did not take long for the Yankees to make a mistake. Will Warren had a throwing error in the second inning. He then struck out the next two batters. There was no harm and no foul, but the error, so early, was a bad look for the Yankees. Jasson Dominguez was not in the lineup for the Yankees. It was probably a scheduled day off, but the Dominguez fielding error in Toronto hurt him.
Scoring Summary
In the first inning, the Yankees jumped out to an early lead when Bellinger hit a solo home run. The Yankees led 1-0. In the second inning, Wells hit a solo home run. The Yankees led 2-0. In the fifth inning, Schwarber hit a two-run home run. The game was tied at 2. In the sixth inning, Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo home run. The Yankees led 3-2.
In the seventh inning, it all fell apart for the Yankees. First, Goldschmidt made a throwing error, then Realmuto hit a three-run home run, and Schwarber and Castellanos scored. It was 6-3, Phillies. In the seventh inning, Volpe hit a solo home run. The Yankees trailed 6-4. Then Judge hit a sacrifice fly and Grisham scored. The Yankees drew to within 1, 6-5. In the eighth inning, Schwarber hit another home run. This one was of the two-run variety. Turner also scored, and it was 8-5, Phillies.
In the ninth inning, Sosa singled and Castellanos scored. The Phillies took a 9-5 lead. Then, Turner tripled and Kepler and Sosa scored, and it was 11-5 Phillies. Then Stott doubled and Sosa scored. It was 12-5, Phillies. That was how the game ended.
Final Thoughts
The Yankees continue to need their pitchers, like Will Warren, to pitch perfectly. They are not hitting and continue to make mistakes. Fans of the team are wondering which other players they will acquire by the July 31 trade deadline. Will Warren pitched well tonight, for 5.2 innings, though he was not perfect. The Yankees made more errors, and the bullpen blew the game.
