Is Alex Bregman Signing With the Arizona Diamondbacks a Matter Of Time?
The Arizona Diamondbacks have been linked to Third Baseman Alex Bregman multiple times this winter, and the rumors are rapidly heating up. With a gaping hole over at the hot corner and an ample amount of money to spend, the Diamondbacks are the perfect fit for Alex Bregman.
Diamondbacks Are In On Bregman
Dan Bickley, co-host of Bickley & Marotta Mornings on Arizona Sports, recently shared a compelling report regarding the Diamondbacksโ pursuit of Alex Bregman.
Bickley added that Bregman wants to reside in Arizona year-round, similar to Corbin Burnes’ last offseason. Like Burnesโ experience, he faces a limited market. At 31 and coming off an injury-plagued season, teams are reluctant to offer him a long-term contract. Scott Boras advised Bregman to accept a short-term, prove-it deal with multiple opt-outs, allowing him to re-enter free agency, but that strategy appears to be backfiring.
Beyond Arizona, no team seems willing to offer the star third baseman a six-year deal at a high annual value. His recurring injuries over the past three seasons have limited his playing time, making teams even more hesitant to commit to a major contract. The longer Bregman waits, the more his market continues to shrink.
Bregman Deal Depends On Ketel Marte
The Diamondbacks appear unlikely to sign him unless they can first find a trade partner for Ketel Marte. Arizona is prioritizing the addition of young, controllable pitching this offseason, while also aiming to avoid creating a gap at the top of their lineup. With emerging stars like Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo, the Diamondbacks already possess an exciting core of young talent. Adding Bregman would bolster their roster with a proven veteran who brings valuable playoff experience to the clubhouse.
With Burnes and key bullpen arms like Justin Martinez and AJ Puk returning next season, the Diamondbacks have the potential to make a significant impact in the National League and contend within a highly competitive division. Their offseason is full of moving pieces, as the front office explores every avenue to strengthen the roster and keep pace with the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, who have already landed elite closer Edwin Diaz.
As the new year approaches, free agent asking prices remain prohibitively high, with teams anticipating that demands will become more reasonable as Spring Training nears. Scott Boras may have once again found himself in a predicament reminiscent of his negotiations involving Matt Chapman and Blake Snell with the San Francisco Giants a few years ago.
